I haven't really used Strava for a couple of years but I just loaded it up to try and use the segment explore function to help find trails (not local to me) for a ride in the near future. Is the satelite view gone?
is there a work around/bodge to explore trails in satelite view instead of maps? or is it a premium function now?
Thanks in advance.
You're right. There's no option to select map type.
If you use Veloviewer then you can click on a segment and view it on there - with a choice of maps (including satellite).
Think they switched (mostly) to openmap from google maps a while back. So no satellite.
Although they dont seem to have switched entirely.
It's there on the desktop version-I was using it earlier, grey box with options to switch views between no less than 5 options.
Ah.. had forgotten about veloviewer. will have a look there later. Cheers.
Although it's not really to look at individual segments. more to get a jist of the area

Got a screenshot of that? I wonder if it's dependent on browser/OS?
I don't get any options to change map types on the "Segment Explore" page but if I go to the activity feed and click on an activity then I can choose from "Terrain", "Standard" or "Satellite".
Same behaviour in both Chrome and Firefox on Kubuntu Linux.
Same here. As Gary says though, not so handy if you're just looking to explore a local area.
Once in segment explorer, go to the top right, in the settings 'cog' you've got the option to choose the map type between standard, satellite, and hybrid.
iPhone version, premium subscriber
That isn't segment explore though. It's just the Boxhill segment page
Ah, it may be premium only for that - I've no setting cog in the segment explore map only the +/- to zoom in/out that are in the top left corner. If I click on a segment then choose "View Details" then I get the options that gravesendgrunt has in his screenshot.
In the android app, the folded map icon on the top bar is still there in segment explore (great unwashed cheapskate edition)
What he said.
Aye, satellite here on chrome on android phone.
Still there for me on Android phone, free edition.
Still available on iPhone app
Or use trailforks?
I'm seeing satellite view on android and laptop (free version)
Ah... so it is still available when using the App. just the not the website?
Ok.
Seems a bit of a strange decision by Strava.
Rarely use my phone. Never use the App and almost certainly wouldn't want to be looking at satelite maps to plan a ride from a phone. Oh well. nevermind.
@centralscrutinizer on a laptop in segment explore? Are you sure? Which browser?
jonba. You are a star.
Thank you
๐
That's way better than Strava's explore function
Cool, cheers @jonba. Loads more segments show up with that than Strava's version.
On any Trailforks map, on the website or the app, you can toggle "Strava", this will show popular mountain biking trail Strava segments overlayed on the trail map.
Strava Segments for Mountain Bike Trails
You can also look at the most popular segments for any specific region in table/text form. Example Corner Canyon Utah: https://www.trailforks.com/region/corner-canyon/stravasegments/
Trailforks also has its own in-house mountain biking heatmap on the website and toggle-able within the mobile app.
If you want you can have satellite, heatmap, trails & segments all on one map!
I think I got the link off here. Looks keep all good things. It has much better functionality. While Strava is good it is some of the third party stuff that really makes it for me.
Jonathan O'Keefe has some good stuff if you Google. Heatmaps and the like. Stravistics app gives you tons of useful extra functions on the site in chrome too.
