Details on how the bike was stolen from a bike shop and description of fief might help.

Other than that, use your insurance co or better still, invest in some cctv perhaps.

In neaerly every bike shop the bikes are cabled together, requireing you to ask for the cable to be unthreaded just to feel the weight of a bike, or to sit on it.

I thought they were pedal less, And you need a door with a push lock every time someone goes in or out, have you thought about tagging so at least all staff know when some scrote decides to chance his arm
I can't think how someone could get away with a full bike quick enough without the staff catching him unless he was violent mind you it is in an undesirable part of town

Blimey, there are some heartless gits on here tonight. I hope they get caught and their feet cut off, (won't be riding away with anyone else's bikes then!)

At James's all the bikes are locked up individually with either one or no pedals attached, and they're all tagged. And there's CCTV. They've done all they can I guess

Test ride gone wrong unfortunately, riding up and down the road turned into the guy riding off and not coming back. Thanks for the supportive replies, all we ask is for you all to keep your eyes peeled for us and if you hear anything then please get intouch. As per the link a £200 reward awaits anybody who comes forward with information which leads to the safe return of the bike.

Many thanks.

The stolen bike is a Trek Madone 4.7, with a 58 inch frame.

Should be easy to find this one anyway!

We had the same many years ago - con artist basically who picked the youngest member of sales staff he could find, went for a ride, came back, chatted a bit more, made some adjustments to the bike then went off and never came back.

Credit card he'd handed over was obviosuly nicked and after that we introduced procedures to check the signature then when chip & pin came in we'd take a payment of 1p to make sure they knew the pin and the card was OK. Then started taking digital pics of the customers as well before they left the shop.

Hope you get the guy and recover the bike.

I'm in Rotherham (maltby) this weekend. I also know one or two shady characters there. I'll have a word to keep an ear twitching

I hope you get some leads and recover the bike if not the thief at the very minimum.

I got fleeced by an incredibly talented guy who had (subsequently well reported) very good slight of hand skills.

He bought a £3000 trailer from us at work and he counted the cash out onto a pile on the counter and managed to take £500 of it back without me noticing.

He went on to commit 3 similar offences in the county that same week.

I learned a lesson that day and now even if my customer counts out the money I ALWAYS recount it before removing it from the counter, any discrepancies can be rectified there and then.

The worst bit was that I was the only staff member there and had to explain to my boss that we were £500 quid down on the trailer sale.

Thankfully he believed me ........ I think.

Thinking outside the box and a bit off topic why can't someone invent some kind of disabling device that needs a transponder to keep activated, it could be as simple as bolted to the chainstay /seatstay with a bar that goes through the spokes , even if it was only available for bike shops to use on demo bikes bloke rides off you press a button or go out of range and the back wheels gets locked up Might break a spoke or two and dumping bike on floor may cause some superficial damage but I bet these could be made for 30 - 40 quid
Come on you would be Dragons denners get inventing, apart from a creative mind I have no engineering know how so on that basis I'm out
And if you do invent it 10% royalties my way

Just an idea 🙂

As Lister11 says, a few shops in the Midlands were targeted, including the lovely peeps at The Bike Yard.

I can only assume the Jack Russell wasn't on patrol...

If you went for a test drive in a car the salesman would usually sit in too?

So, when a customer takes a bike out, should they not be accompanied? Ride along with them. Most bike shop staff would keep up with a tea leaf or at leaast stand a better chance of recovering the bike than they would standing at the shop door.

I sold 2 bikes on eBay recently. One chap wanted to test ride one of them, I was more than happy but said I would accompany him on my other bike, "to make sure he was ok" Strangely, he didn't turn up....

This is exactly why bikes get stolen in the first place, god help you if any of your bikes get nicked, just goes to show we should be careful out there & on here!

This is exactly the same as in the trials world, there is no form of way to check out stolen Bikes. It would be good if ALL Bike shops, developed some form of National Database of Stolen bikes. Somewhere we as buyers can check Frame numbers prior to purchase. Even more so when the prices of Mountainbikes are equal to a new Trials bike (Motor) and a small car!!!

Or make Smar****er compulsory on All New frames/forks/shocks.

JEJames, i hope you get it back. I'm sure you would Whytes arn't exactly Common on the trails are they! and always turn an eye.

The maximum sentence for handling stolen goods is actually longer than the maximum sentence for theft. That's assuming the bike's rightful owner (and his large mates) don't catch up with you first.

Different shades of dodgy-ness. These peeps I know wouldn't steal it but mix in circles that may well hear about it. Yeah Maltby has some wonderful people there. If there is anymore info you can share then pm me such as a discription, accent or any clues he may have slipped out in error. I know it's a long shot. We all would love you guys to get the bike back asap

Ps a good friend of mine had 3 bikes stolen, one of which was less than a week old. He called me nearly in tears and said he was going to pay some hard but he knew £250 to get them back. I didn't think more of it till a few hours later and he got them back. This guy put the word out he was looking for a bike and this scumbag contacted him and went to view. When he got there called my mate who rushed down and confirmed they were his. All bikes were given back and a slap or three was distributed. This was in Nottingham and I thought when I bike was nicked that was it. The 3 was stil locked together and scratched to shit but damn, so pleased i was wrong

Not the most inconspicuous bike! Best of luck getting it back.

Have the police been helpful?
