[Closed] Sticky/heavy Ultegra 6703 shifters, cures?

I'm just rebuilding my Salsa Vaya with an Ultegra triple drivetrain to make it a more versatile tourer/'gravel' bike.

The second hand 6703 shifters I bought feel fine without cables, but once cabled and tensioned up the shifting gets very heavy, especially as you move up the block. I'm going to try a few things but wondered if anyone had any tips?

1) If the shifter moves smoothly and easily with no cable attached, is there any point blasting it out with WD40?

2) Would GT85 do the same job as WD40 in breaking down the old grease in the shifter, assuming this is the problem? (looks guiltily at shifter already dripping with GT85... ๐Ÿ™„ )

3) Is there some trick to the cable routing coming into the shifter? I've only ever routed old style shifters with cables outside of the bar tape. Should I use a ferrule where the cable meets the shifter or not? Is one cable path better than the other when coming into the shifter?
