Are we talking AM or DH bike? I was planning on taking my NP mega but a few people on Facebook are saying take the DH bike.
What say you STW's?
My DB Alpine copes fine there although I'm not hitting the road gap and other silly big stuff.
Lots of big bike warriors with a severe lack if skills there. My GF put many of them in their place (so to speak) on her 130mm boardman FS.
Not that different to many trail centres I expect ,just longer downhills with the added bonus of the cable cars.
Sounds like the AM bike it is then alpin! It seems like there are quite a few peddally tracks there or the hackleberg?
I'll be going there at the end of July. All i've got is my AM Radon Slide (160mm travel) so i'll be taking that!
Hackelberg is good fun. One of the better trails there, imo. More of a natural feel to it.
Don't just stick to the prepared tracks. Go explore. Use the lifts to gain some height and drop over into the valley to the south. Some great trails there. A bus runs between Zell and Saalbach for a few euros.
@dknwhy - we will hopefully be meeting some german friends whilst we are there. They all have Radon Slides and love them!
@ alpin - exploring is definitely the plan hence why we would prefer to take the AM bikes. Do you think it's worth us buying an Austrian map for our satmap (garmin equivalent) or will the available paper maps be sufficient?
I bought my Radon especially for this trip as my XC hardtail just wasn't suitable really.
Where are you staying?
We've got an apartment in Saalbach so get the Jokercard included.
I had my Mega for Saalbach.
Spot on for it.
@ dknwhy - we are staying at pension enzian also with a joker card included. I'm hearing from my german friends that a lot of the xc trails are also way marked so we planned to do some bike park stuff and some more natural trails if we can.
@ kayak23 - think I'll swap my SG magic mary for the snakeskin version then the mega will be ready to go!
@nsbikescore1 - sounds good. I'm going with the family so not sure how much riding time i'll get. Do plan on doing the big5 loop though while i'm there.
I've ridden XC stuff in Germany and Austria before but nothing list assisted so will be a first for me.
When I was in Garmisch a few years ago, the bike trails were really well marked and you can usually pick up a pretty detailed map for 5 euros from the local tourist office. I tend to do that anyway as i'm a bit of a map nerd and it's a nice memento of where i've been.
@ dknwhy - yes we plan to do the big 5 loop too and just try and get out and explore as much as possible. Think we may even hire a guide for one day at least. I'm pretty excited. We've ridden a bit in kitzbuhel, but mainly we are used to portugal and morzine so I'm looking forward to seeing how this compares ๐
I rode an Orange 5AM there and it was fine with big brakes and fox 36s. It's a brilliant area also try Wargrain bike Park it's not too far away and great if the weathers bad as it's not too exposed at all. Have a hoot whatever trails you end up doing!
Thanks suggsey. How do we get to wargrain?
I was being driven and I paid zero attention I'm afraid to say, too busy looking out the windows at the scenery. ๐ณ
Ha ha, ok no problems!
It's west on the 164 from saalbach. If you google it they have their own website.
bikewagrain.com
Doh East i mean east of saalbach ๐ณ
AM bike is fine for everything in that valley, just be careful on X-line and Pro-line if you don't like road gaps etc.
Flying Gangster over in Leogang will be fun but you won't be able to go flat out as it will be a bit breaking bumpy, it hammered down on opening weekend and the tracks got beaten up in Leogang, you'll only be wishing you had the DH bike there.
Keep an eye out for me and the lad on Trek Sessions.
Thanks colp that's all very helpful. Hope the weather improves!

Map for the area or satnav map?
Easy enough to find with a generic road map.
Either Kompass or Freytag map of the area are good.
Sorry alpin, I meant maps for our satmap so we can use gpx files or do you think the piste maps are sufficient?
We stayed with Kevin & Sarah at Pension Enzian last Summer, you will have a great time. Family & time permitting Kevin may come out with you. Hackleberg can be ridden on a hardtail really, you'll have great fun on a Mega - I took my Five, it was perfect. There are loads of trails, Bergstadl is very technical is places (sharp hairpins & steep rooty drops), but there are easier trails to get your eye in such as the Milka Line. I did most of my research using the http://www.bike-circus.at/en.html website and this > http://www.worldbikeparks.com/saalbach-hinterglemm-bike-park/trails
Enjoy !!
Been twice now and used a Trek Rumblefish Pro so 120mm travel without any trouble.
Have built a Switchback unveil 9 for this year with a bit more travel. My lad will be on my Rumblefish.
Thanks folks! I hear great things about enzian and Kevin seems a sound chap!
