BTR or Swarf will both do 12mm dropouts, as I guess would any custom builder like 18 Bikes, Shand etc.

'Steel Hardtail' is a bit generic though, what kind of frame is he after, XC, Trail, DH, wheel size?

Depends on the goal Shirley?

If you want to be able to swap wheels with your other bike for example I imagine it's exactly what you want.

+ many other possible reasons I can't think of

Correct Amedias - wheel swapping between bikes.....

I have suggested adaptors to move to QR ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers for all the replies....all look great, but expensive.....it is for a 'winter bike'......will look at 2H transitions though.....

Funny that, I managed to pop my QR back wheel out on a steep corner at Inners the other week, on the BFe. A through axle probably would have stopped it. ๐Ÿ˜

What makes it pointless on HT but not on FS?

I should have qualified that. It's pointless for stiffness. Wheel retention, strength and compatibility I agree with. It's why my hartail runs 12mm ๐Ÿ™‚

hmmm, they're 'located' more firmly in the dropouts than QRs, might be a tiny difference fo'sure, but its noticeable all the same.

Probably cheaper to buy a rear hub from Superstar that can switch between axle standards and have your LBS build the wheel up again.
Your mate would then only need to play around with hub adapters when he wants to change the wheelset between bikes.

What makes it pointless on HT but not on FS?

FS frames have swingarms moving around all over the place, so it helps stiffen the rear triangle up.

HT frames are inherently stiff being a pair of triangles. But a thru-axle can add to that stiffness.

*most* 12mm <> QR conversion ends require removal of cassette as well, and at that point it's moving towards faff territory.

sorry for the blatant plug but our production bike is available with 12mm bolt thru. The pic is singlespeed but available with derailleur hanger too.
