Hi guys!

Just shopping about on the steel hardtail front and I've come up with two options so far:

On-one 456 - £145

or

Ns Society - £135

Does anyone know anything about or have any experience of the above two frames? If so can you help me make a choice?

I want to build whatever I get up failry cheaply and have a set of manitou Travis 150 TPC forks waiting- would these do the job?

Would I be silly to go single speed- all i want is a commuter / trailbike.

Cheers.

Dave

loads of very happy 456 owners on here, many of whom admit to neglecting more expensive steeds in their gnarly stables (in jokes there).

456 is built for 4, 5, or 6inch forks so 150mm (6") travis should work fine (or as fine as manitou ever do, baddum thank you I'm here all week, try the steak).

I recently built up a 456 after years of full sussers and it is a blast and has wooed me to hardtails. No experience of the NS but the 456 is a bargain (especially since they knocked a few quid of the price since I got mine).

+1 for the 456. Absolutely delighted with mine, and they're nicely finished for the money now - as well as being great riding frames. You'll either get SS or not get it - lots of reasons for both. I had a couple of Inbreds that I ran SS at first then geared, and now my 456 is geared too - and I'm getting much more out of it. You should be able to put together a geared drive train really cheaply from bits on here.

Agree with Munqe-chick on how people's 'rigs' get left in their 'stables of gnar' ( 😉 ) when there's a 456 on offer. I'm going to check the Anthem X over to make sure it's ok, having had a couple of weeks off, when the 456 has been out almost every day..

+2 for the 456. I've got gears on mine, I like ride up steep stuff before heading back down them. The 456 does both well. I've got a Scandal for the SS duties as I want it to be nice and light.

+3 for the 456, I love mine, by far the best bike I ever owned.

Get it bought.

+4 for the 456 love mine, flies, has got niggles, but its amazing to ride. For normal blokes who really like a mountain bike which will make the ups painless and make the most of the downs the 456 really is good. Ok when its really rough or mega drops I prefer my bullit, but for the rest of the time the 456 rules.

Although I think it would be good to hear from any NS riders, I'll bet its a brill bike too, personally I'd like to see you buy it just so we can all find out what its like and for a bit of variety.. .

I have just built a 456 and been on it a couple of times.

Sure it rides fine but after 6 years riding full sus it is a bit shock.
It is good fun and I want to make it a road/xc/local loop bike which it will be fine for once I toughen up my hide.

Also suffering from the chainsuck issue which is dissappointing as the whole drivetrain is brand new. Not had to deal with this for a few years after Cannondale and Orange full sus.

I'll chip in on the side of the NS, had mine for about a year now since my full suss was stolen and loving it! Bags of fun, all day comfort and great for hooning around on.

I'm 5"10 and have the large (bought it cheap off a mate as I just needed something to ride) but it's too big to be honest, the TT is pretty long.

My missus has an 18" inbred and I much prefer the Society, never ridden a 456 though. Either bike sounds like it'll be ace, personally I'd get the NS cos every man and his niche dog has got an on one these days 😉
