there's already an STW group on strava.

None 🙁

I had a few but some ex-Giant sponsored Cat 1 roadie near me has decided to take up mountain biking and has hoovered all the climb KOM's up like a whale inhaling krill.

And I walk down anythign technical so the descents were never going to be KOM's for me.

Have a few, proudest one was skyline at Afan despite getting caught up in some mince. Third now though : (. Going to try and get a few in Morzine (times this early in the season don't look too hard) which is a recipe for limb shattering.

Likewise had a few climbs too but teh pros lap them up soon enough. Going to give them a go on my new 29er soon though.

As sad as it seems, Strava has made me get out on my bike more than anything. I never went out on my bike on my own before but it gives me a 'challenge' to compensate for the lack of a social element.

EDIT: 8 - lost a few. I WILL regain them! 😡

I appear to have 6 at the moment including a couple of roadie ones 😀

Lost a couple and have been equaled in a coupel recently so I may have to get back out there

i had 4, currently have none. all roadie ones. I find the roadie ones are very hotly contested indeed, you know if you get one it's going to be challenged very shortly

Mine are about half and half, mainly climbs, couple of descents. I seem to have lost several lately without being told I'd lost them, as if they've been deleted.

30 KOMs 24 of which are on the road. All uphill.

Slightly unfair though as living in London there are loads of Segments! Loads more riders as well, but still.

Proudest was a brief (1 day) stint on Swains Lane in North London, a local hill climb section (Urban Hill Climb Race)

Didn't realise there was a STW group...I'll go investigate.

Have 3 or 4 in my local woods which took a significant amount of effort to get!

Either 3 or 6 - which are KOMs and which are CRs in the list?

This despite the fact that I've only just started experimenting with it in the last week and haven't ridden anything in anger yet as I'm coming off an injury.

I think all mine are just because nobody else has ridden these hills yet! So I guess it's not the quantity of KOMs but the quality of them that counts...

Quite a few but in newcastle most of the off road ones aren't that contested. There are a few with some battles going on

It has also done something wierd and created them automatically for walks I've done which mean I have about 5 where I am the only person to have done the segment?

just counted - 23 on the bike.

I do go out to try and grab them occasionally. It is a more interesting/motivated way to go out and ride some hard fast sections.

10, but 9 of those came on two rides and on several I seem to be the only one to have logged them

None, best I've got is 3rd in a flat sprint outside Tesco!

Judging by the times on the road ones, I'm not likely to get any either.

5 in total
3 I'm first out 1 rider
one I went down it (in 2010) but strava thinks I went up it when I imported the routes from garmin connect
one is a downhill footpath only possible at night due to walkers.
So nothing to be proud of.

MTB KOM `s are worth nothing. Too many sections only ever ridden by 3 or 4 bloaters.

Descents are pretty meaningless too.

The popular roady climbs is where you get the true glory.

Anything else is hollow

http://app.strava.com/segments/760505

Number 5 on that leaderboard, Jean Claude Pretorious, has the best name ever.

I used to have loads of KOMs but it turns out that that was only because not many people had ridden those sections. I seem to get an email every other day now telling me someone has beaten my time.

When I first signed up to strava back in Febuary I uploaded a gpx of hamsterley forest trails I'd ridden last year and on most of the sections I was first out of a leaderboard of about 10. Some of those sections now have over 200 riders and I'm just about in the top 10% if I'm lucky and all my KOMs have gone. Its great to see it taking off but on the popular routes the KOM is now forever out of my reach.

I had 2. One gained completely by accident, didn't even know the segment was there (and TBH, it's a bloody stupid segment, on shared use canal towpath). I've still got that one.

The other one I held for all of 3 days - it was on a long climb near me which I'd specifically gone out to get and I beat the previous KOM by a significant margin. Unfortunately, a certain well know MTBer follows me on Strava and 3 days later, he'd gone out and annihilated my time. Still, good to know that it took a pro like Nick Craig to beat it. 😉

+1 mooman.

I'm still immensely proud of my 3 KOM's. 😉 (Over reasonably popular routes I might add) but true glory as you say is doing well on an extrmely popular area ridden by a wide range of cyclists all the time.

(I was 9th once on a cat 4 climb that was clearly being used by some very fast people - 11th now) - That was awesome.

MTB KOM `s are worth nothing

There are plenty of popular routes though, any trail centre and popular bridleways will have hundreds. Indeed I've had a few road KOMs on my remedy so I imagine it works both ways.

My most popular local descents (blue pig and pecket well) have <30 riders but the standard is very high I would say.

Plus, I think DH or off road loops and routes generally are a better indication of all-round rider skill than who's got the biggest legs?

I've a good few climb and descent KOMs around the Surrey Hills obtained during that Strava honeymoon period that exists after initially joining. I'm over that now though and accept my KOM's are slowly going to go...never suffered knee pain until I joined Strava 🙁

I noticed after losing a KOM yesterday that this:

"Better get out there and show them who’s boss!"

has now become...

"Now get out there, have fun and be safe. "

😀

Like others have said, KOM's don't mean a great deal on a lot of segments...I ride with a few folk who can annihilate me, but they haven't or have only just got GPS'.
Even though I've got 79 KOM's (I had over a 100), half of those were got on foreign trails or places where not many folk ride. I'd only class myself as an average rider too.

Loads, but not that much competition in the Basque Country, locals are slow to take up strava. Got a couple of pro scalps though, and my descent kom on Col du Tourmalet stood for almost a year (didn't know I even had it until it was beaten)

I have 13 but most aren't contested.

They are very easy to generate - just find a route people rarely ride.

LOL - can anybody match my shitness ?

there's a segment in California, 6.3 mile, almost all climbing that I get to ride in the middle of summer

I am 370th out of 391 !! 8)

I do hold 2 KoMs but I'm pretty much the only person to have ridden them on the same route (19 mile loop, so others do extra bits)

30 riders, is not alot, a few of the local drags i ride regularly have over 70 riders and over 300rides. and i know the power is only a guide but when you see high 400s/500s Watts you know you haven't a chance.

As for the comment about DH, unless you are very careful it is going to end in tears, that are alot of stupid people as clearly evidenced by the current legal case in the US.

There's a bloke that rides almost the same commute as me that averages ~23mph on a 10 mile TT so i'm chuffed to have any at all!

30 riders, is not alot,

Indeed, that's what I was saying. What I meant is that just because fewer riders have ridden a segment doesn't necessarily mean that the times will be poorer. I'm generally top 0.5-2% on trails I'm riding blind at trail centres that have had >250 riders (supposedly more competition = higher standard) but I'm only 2nd-4th on a lot of local trails I know like the back of my hand and have <30 riders.

I'm sure it's the same for many places with big MTB scenes making the local routes a high standard.

I live quite close to Keswick in Cumbria. When I was stuck for somewhere to ride or only had a couple of hours spare, the Borrowdale Bash and Whinlatter were my go to routes. I can't take it easy on either of those routes now as I'm trying to hold on to the positions I've got or claw an extra few places up the leaderboards...yes, it's sad I know. Although it does wonders for your fitness, it's the same for those you're trying to beat too!

true, you really need to look at the thru traffic and rider numbers, lots of riders and lots of rides i think the standard will rise.

I have 1.

The segment is so remote that it has only been ridden by one other person. And since I walked up half of it, and still beat that rider by a fair bit, I can only assume that they sat down by the river and had a sandwich.

[s]Taff, you from Bristol?
[/s]
Scrap that, just noticed you're hampshire.

I've no KOMs, but having said that, attaining KOMs around Ashton Court and Leigh Woods is bloody difficult, and a 3rd once was my highlight (on the Swoops - now tied 7th).

I've managed a 20something on the climb to the gate singletrack which I'm quite proud of.

I'm of the opinion that after Bikefest and the sheer amount of riders constantly riding there, any high result is a good one.

Keeps me aiming to try harder.

I never normally enter my mtb rides onto strava. But did so for 1st time after yesterdays ride.
My point is somewhat proven. I gained 4th position on a section ridden by 32 riders .. and less than a minute off the KOM .. which aint bad considering I stopped to wait while the guy I was riding with had a piss .. I stand by my comment of MTB KOM `s.

18 but most are solo or people loads slower (and I'm not quick so that's probably not a good KOM). There's a couple I'm quite pleased about as it means I'm actually getting fitter/stronger.

It's no good saying MTB KOMs are worthless. The database needs to start somewhere!
There are, however, loads of things that can affect MTB KOMs. Walkers, other MTBers, livestock, a nice photo opp, fall, etc, etc.

There are a couple of good local routes though that don't really get effected by any of that though. A good 60+ riders have done the routes. The KOM is a proper fit chap, etc. If I beat the time, I certainly wouldn't think it was worthless.

Anyway - get out my way...

Alright TR, let this go will you :).

I've got 82 KOM but expect that to drop nearly every week. Some are very hottly contested and i hold a few which i shouldn't being the xc jey-boy that i am. Also know of a few which i should get pretty easily knowing the times i have at present.
Strava does make some rides pretty fun and good for training. A good tool

1 less than I used to have.

I'm sure there's 1 Pro XC racer that just goes out, does a warm-up, then nails 1 hill, to get KoM on every possible variation of ascent.

Next time I'll put the start/end in slightly odd positions to prove that he's a medal collector, and has to go out of the way to hit the start/end points.

..re-read my original post stalker.

Strava is a fantastic training tool. Once you know the sections on your local ride you push harder on each one. But the KOM have gotta be earned.
Some bloater on a mtb doing a trail only ever visited by his fatter friends or some roady risking his & others lives on a descent is really worth nothing.

True this. I live in the far too popular Surrey Hills area and just try to get in the top 20% on the well used road climbs. So I think all claimed KOMs should give number of riders to give them some sort of value.

I do have one KOM though with 166 riders on it - it's not a climb though and was obtained by riding on someone's wheel then sprinting past - a few others on that ride are a few secs behind me.
