[#3945164]

Afternoon, just got a new Rocket Ron for my tubeless set up as I managed to put a gash in the last one! The previous ones sealed no issues, but this one I can't get the initial seal to work on it. Anyone got any tips on how to get that initial seal? I'm jsut using a track pump to inflate!

Cheers!

I've found these tyres to be a bit of a mare!

Washing up liquid with a spot of water to form a thick slimey seal and pushing the tyre flat around the valve area whilst pumping furiously did it for me. Eventually ๐Ÿ™‚

Maxxis LUST are such a doddle in comparison.

Use a mini co2 inflator. It'll get it seated every time.

Nothing compares to the ghetto tubeless inflator.

3000cm3 @ 120psi is more air than the tyre holds.

Guaranteed to inflate any tyre, ever.

And so easy to make!

valve core out of the valve stem

use a tyre lever run around the rim to pull the beads towards the sides before trying to inflate.

I've Rocket Rons on two wheelsets and lucky they have sealed easily, first time, every time - perhaps yours are defective? I use a Topeak Joe Blow Mountain track pump. The CO2 can 'shock' the latex and cause it to congeal into a rubber ball.

You could try putting a tube in and leaving it inflated overnight to mould the tyre to rim.

Slight change to the question but how long are the tyres supposed to stay inflated before you add the sealant? I've put 45psi in but only stays in for a matter of seconds, is this good enough or do i need a better seal?

Hmm, ok, so I've got them so they are sealing, but have no noticed a dent in the rim causing the air to piss out! Is it worth risking this to see if the selant solves it or do I need to get the dent out? If so how easy is it or am I best taking it to my LBS to see if they can sort it out?

Cheers!

Doesn't sound good that you've got a dent in your rim being honest. Track pumps haven't got enough "humph" to get that initial bite but cartridge inflators do so I would have tried that first.

Its sealing now with a track pump, in that the tyre has popped out to the edges of the rims and the tyre is inflating, however the dent is meaning it then deflates! Seems to have sealed everywhere else though! Guessing the dent came when I tore a hole in the old tyre!

Pump up, leave overnight, keep doing. If after a bit it doesn't seal, go back to tubes.

Get a pair of molegrips on the rim and bend the dent gently out. I've done it to two largish dents in my tubeless rims and they still inflate and stay up perfectly. Put some rag between the jaws to stop them damaging the rims too much. Persevere, it'll be worth it to not worry about punctures.

thread resurrection...

All the petrol stations round here have 'upgraded' their air compressors to these new digital ones, which dont seem to supply anywhere near the pressure that the old one did.

Just managed to get some hans dampf tyres to seat by using liberal amounts of vaseline between the tyre bead and the rim, with a particularly large amount a few inches around where the valve is located. Removed the valve core snd then used a car foot pump.

As mentioned above - the ghetto tubeless inflator. Delivers more air more quickly than a CO2 cartridge and costs practically nowt.

Had my first go on tubeless (using stans conversion kit) today and used the ghetto tubeless inflator. Both wheels worked first time with no hassle. 50psi did the job for me

The method that never fails for me is to add a tube and then inflate to 35 psi. This seats both beads. Now remove the tube by unseating one bead only. Then inflate with the valve core removed from the stans valve. Because one side of the tyre is fully sealed it goes up straight away. Seat it all round then unseat just enough to add some sealant. Have done this about eight times very quickly and very easily. No soap/vas or messing about

I had the same issue. I'm running maxxis non-UST tyres and normal rims with Stans rim kit. I poured the required amount of sealant into the tyres and mounted on rim. Didnt need to remove valve core. Then I used Duck tape and sealed the gap between the rim and the tyre. Took five mins. Then used one co2 canister to inflate. Honestly it worked a treat this evening.

cocking hell drop the pressures or you'll have the tyres of the rim in no time. Stans aren't meant to go that high. It's usually at this point someones tyre explodes covering them in spaff and they then declare that stans is cack, rather than user/installation error. ๐Ÿ˜€

By the time the air is released into the tyre it's nowhere hear 50 psi. I meant I pump the coke bottle (ghetto tubeless inflator) to around 50psi before releasing the kink

I tried to go tubeless yesterday...

Mavic cross rides with gorilla tape.
stans fluid
mavic valves
ghetto inflator (working and tested)
WTB weirwolf (might be tubless ready, might not be, probably not, but it has the right numbers on the sidewall)

failed miserably for about 3 hours.

+1 Except I put the sealant in by unscrewing the valve core
