As above I'm trying to build a light weight full sus for general use
And have been thinking of mmx rim but unsure just how much they can take

Alpines are marginally lighter than Crests.
I use Podium MMXs ostensibly for racing, but in fact have used them for most of my normal riding too, because I prefer how the bike rides with the lighter wheels. They're fine, slight dent in the rear, but nowt major. I've done Dalby, Afan, Haldon and countless Surrey Hills rides on them.
