[Closed] Stanchion wear - coil Lyriks - how bad is this?

[#5893256]

This happened in 2 hours yesterday. I still dont know if there was something trapped between the stanchion and fork arch, or something in the seals, so I'm replacing the seals tomorrow just in case.

There are no real scratches, just the rubbing you can see in this picture. The surface feels a little rough, but not much.

Is this going to be less of an issue because these are coil forks, or is it worth trying to patch this up somehow (nail varnish)?

Or is it time to buy a new set of Pikes....?

That's on the outside of the fork leg ain't it? If they are coils you may get away with iit but I am no expert.

Shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted!

They're coil and they're beyond repair so drop the lowers, clean and lube the seals and just keep riding them... Maybe a bit of extra stiction, maybe worth dropping the lowers more often for a seal clean up but they'll still work

Yep, that's the outside, there used to be a "160mm" marker, but that's rubbed off.

Happened to my revs last year, after doing the WHW, I don't think the Neoguard helped, keeping all the Glencoe grit in there. I put the vernier onto them, and there is only a about 2-3 thou of wear. As said above, keep the lowers serviced, and they'll be fine for a while yet.

Yeah, if the wear is very slight, surely there's enough flexibility in the wiper and oil seals to maintain contact properly? Is the issue that the problem is likely to worsen, as small bits of grit start to get inside?

Interesting, I was thinking of fitting a neoguard, maybe not the way to go.

Yes , that's why I said it maybe worth doing the lowers service more often to slow further wear

...and fit a bender fender to keep mud off the seals

Dispell a myth for me, scratches on stanchions dont cause air loss from Rockshox forks.....?

The issue is loss of lube oil and further wear?

Thats right when were talking rs air forks (obviously doesn't apply to coil)...with the rs air forks the air is held in an internal tube so there's no pressured air behind the seal so if seals are damaged/stanchions worn, there's no air loss

@agentdagnamit- Yep that is about right. You will find that the worse they get the more contaminated the lubricating oil in the lowers get. This shouldn't affect the air or dampening chambers in the short run as they are sealed and separate from the lowers, although in the long term dirty oil in the lowers may damage the seals.

my dual air 454 pikes are like that. The dirt will get inside so it's a good idea to service them regularly.
What I also noticed, especially on very wet/muddy/gritty rides, the performance really goes down, they become very hard and very unresponsive. Thats why I always lube them with brunox deo fork lube which really gets them going again.
