Sorry pic really heavy so hope you can decipher.
Do I need to rebuild my wheel with a specific hub to go 1x10 from SS or does the hub in the picture suit? Very ,very novice mechanic. If hub needs replacing with a suitable one for 1x10 then I will have to get that done at an Lbs. Sorry for the lame question. Yes, new hub or wheel for you to go 10 speed.

Simply, yes.

The bit that your single cog goes onto is about 40mm wide to get 10 in the same place. Also, is there a hanger for the derailleur on that frame? May be that I just can't see it from that angle.

Edit- looking again, it seems to be some kind of bolt on dropout, so you will need a new one of them too probably.

Ah ...... thank you Rickos . Thinking about it I will maybe be better off with a new wheel, rather than the faff of getting it rebuilt. Cheers

As tthew asks above, does the dropout take a rear mech? Not the question you asked but you need to know!

Cheers tthew . Yeah no hanger. Will have to get one of those also. I did factor that in on the price after totting everything up. So another stupid question. If I buy another wheel complete with hub(it's 29er not that that makes a difference a) what hub should /would I need with it?

135mm wide almost certainly, with a 10 speed freehub but the shop will know.

Superstu . Yes it does. It's a 2013 Kona Unit so can run SS and geared. Thanks. Does anyone know a good place for a rear wheel? Was thinking Merlin Cycles? Any deals about?

135mm with 10 speed free hub is what I'm after?

Well I THINK so, but given that the original question was, as you said, a bit lame, I really think you'd best be getting some proper advice from someone who can see all the other possible issues that may crop up. Worth paying the LBS premium for this I reckon.

Thanks tthew . Will be making a visit tomorrow morning. Out of my depth really. Thought maybe it was something I could do. As happens I will gladly pay for it to be done right. Was going to buy everything from Crc, and give it a go. Me thinks like you, it's best left to someone who knows. At least now I know. Thanks for advice peeps. Much appreciated.

Sorry if that sounded a bit harsh. Another alternative, do you know anyone who is good with that kind of stuff? I accept that if you just hand over a big wedge to a shop you're not going to learn anything about bike maintenance.

If you don't know someone, where about do you live? There's some surprisingly accommodating and knowledgeable people on here who might help in exchange for some beer.

It's an easy job, but only if you know what you're doing, get a mate to help if you can

Thanks tthew ... No worries. Cyclistm .... tthew ......I do know a friend who has the tools and know how, but just wanted to see if it's something I could do.
Hence the silly question not knowing.
It will be either Lbs or my mate. I will still want to buy the parts myself though. All Shimano XT 1x10 with Hope NW £167 from CRC. Plus now I need a rear wheel with 1x10 compatible hub. Lbs pricey or mate cheap but putting on him or me messing it up. Anyways I've found out what I needed initially so thanks 🙂
