So im looking at a new wheelset which comes with a Microspline freehub which i dont need

I need to run a Sram XD freehub

Rather than paying £80+ for a new Sram XD EXP freehub can i use an old non EXP XD freehub off a 2018 DT 350 hub or do they not work with the newer EXP hubs? (ive an old 350 hub laying around)

Not sure on the technicalities between exp and non-exp, but Merlin have the free hubs at a more reasonable price:

That's XDR (road) which is different from XD, not sure you can mix and match?

Cheers but as said that’s 142mm XDR free hub

You can put an XD cassette on a XDR hub if you add a 1.85mm spacer washer.

It’s a different ratchet design and I’m pretty sure they can’t be mixed and matched. I’ve not tried, but I did check with Madison about it once IIRC.

They sometimes come up on eBay so you may end up not having to pay too much once you’ve sold your MS Freehub.

You can apparently convert an EXP freehub to work on non-EXP ratchet hubs by removing a spacer, but not sure about the other way round. XDR freehub will make your hub axle 1.85mm too long. Might not be an issue depending on frame tolerances, but I’d hold out for the right one.

nveer actually done it but my understanding is the freehub is almost identical but you need to use all the worky bits from the EXP. Apparently it all works but doesn't all meet up quite perfectly so the seal between the freehub and hub body is bad, I've seen some posts where people have done a little machining to close the gap up.

If you put an XD freehub on an axle designed for XDR then the end caps (even if you use the correct ones) won’t sit on properly and the cassette/hub will drop off every time you tilt the wheel over when it’s not on the bike.

Cheers for all the replies

Issue is now sorted by purchasing a £170 more expensive wheelset that comes with Microspline and XD EXP freehubs
