Sram X01 eagle 12 speed chain - poor shifting

Drivetrain was getting worn so I thought I'd put a fresh one on.

Shimano 12 speed Xt, recently new cable and outer. ZTTO 10-52 cassette. SRAM X01 Eagle 12 speed chain.

Took it out for a ride last night, and the shifting was very poor.

If I adjusted it to shift up onto the larger sprockets, it wouldn't shift down into the smaller sprockets.

If I adjusted it to shift down into the smaller sprockets, it would sometimes downshift twice, and wouldn't shift up into larger sprockets cleanly

Shifting down into smaller sprockets definitely seemed to be more the issue, as even though I could see the mech had moved way over right, it was still not moving the chain.

Anyway, I decided to have a look tonight. Still couldn't get it to work on the bike stand.

Tried a part worn Shimano chain to see if that made any difference and bingo - great shifting straight away.

What's up with the SRAM chain? Anyone else had this?

I only bought the X01 due to reports of great longevity.
Might have to get another shimano instead.

Yeah it's the risk of mix and match I guess. I've heard of shimano 12 spd chains not playing well with other cassettes... but not the other way around.

sounds like a sticky cable or sloppy jockey to me.

I ran a Sram chain on a Shimano cassette for a week or so (all 12 obviously) and it was a tad sluggish, so swapped it for a Shimano chain and it was much better. Not used the ZTTO cassette though.

There was a ZTTO thread about a month ago, and I think some one else had the same issue (new chain jumping) I think he took a dremel to the cassette in the end. Sorry, not much help

Whenever I put on a new cassette I also replace the jockey wheels and chainring - no idea whether either of these would help...

ZTTO 10-52 is a pretty decent cassette IMHO - for the price anyway.

Sounds like a sloppy mech to me. Spent ages chasing around fixing a full XT set up with new chain, then cassette, the hanger, then jockey wheels, all no joy. Changed the mech and instant happiness. The mech was just not playing ball even though it looked in decent enough nick.

The usual stuck record is to pipe up about hanger alignment. I've no idea whether this is that but it could be and I thought I'd pop the point up just because I've been messing around with mine a bit recently in the name of trial and error. Shimano apparently suggest that up to 4mm difference at the rim is OK. From my tinkering I reckon at 3-4mm out my 12 speed is a dog's dinner. OK on the smaller sprockets, clearly out at the bottom end. I think you get noticeable (even necessary, depending on your point of view) improvement down to an alignment within 1mm, and in my case I reckon mine needs that to shift well. This is with AXS or XT.

As a result, I've ordered myself a Park Tool gauge to replace my shonky old one, in the name of a smidge more accuracy.

I find my Sram xx1 chains excellent. Running one on a 12 speed XT cassette / mech / shifter with a Sram crank and chainring. Started with a Shimano 12 speed chain which was a bag of crap as soon as it got wet or muddy (had a Shimano compatible chainring at that point) - now on my 2nd xx1 chain on that same drivetrain.

Given only the chain has changed have you got it the right length?

Thanks for thoughts all.
Pretty sure the mech is straight, without slop, but I will check that.

Cable has only been on a couple of weeks and seems smooth.

Chain is same number of links as the one that came off and also the other Shimano chain which shifts well.

What I can't get over is how night - and day the shifting is between the Shimano and the SRAM chains.

Shimano was shifting perfectly as soon as I put it on (didn't even adjust the cable), whereas the SRAM one I've been faffing for ages.
