Randomly my rear SRAM x9 deraileur took out a spoke last night. There is quite a bit of lateral play but from what i can find online this is standard. it is set up pretty well and i was changing gear at the wrong time in anger. Do you think it time for the bin?

Not if you didn't snap it, no. Do Sram have limit screws like shimano, if so make sure they are set to stop mech meeting wheel.

x9's are meant to float at the pivot - saves having to fit a wobbly floating top jockey wheel.
Check your limit screws, and your mech hanger alignment...
