I was trying to adjust pad contact on my elixir CR brakes and was winding them out a bit when the whole red adjust just fell off! Is this a case of numpty not knowing how many turns I'd made as I was expecting a stop before that happened.

Well there is no definite 'detent' that it sits into to tell you it's at the end. However, after a certain point you can no longer unwind the twists from the hose that exits in front of the red barrel, which kind of indicates, somewhat subtly, that you've gone far enough.
How much adjustment did you want.... There's bloody loads.
