[Closed] Sports Personality of the year shortlist...it's a bit safe and samey.

Couple of golfers, couple of cricketers, a diver and a runner and the bob sleigh girl. I always wonder what the crtiteria for nomination is on this. Seems it would be better named, "Who has had a good year sportingly". The list is hardly full of "personalities".
But I can't name any alternatives, but Mr Rossi should get the World award.

Why Rossi? He didn't do much this year. I agree he should definitely get it sometime, or even a lifetime award.

It's getting a tad predictable and dull now.

You forgot to mention Cavendish is in there. No Gee Atherton, obviously ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

I thought Cav was on it? David Haye is also a great personality - albeit one that shouldn't come within a million miles of this award after his last outing.

It's never about real personalities, though. It can't be if Ryan Giggs just won it. It's about achievements on the field of play, a bit of colour and personality is just a bonus.

yeah give it to cav - fill him full of redbull & vodka then poke him with a stick & send him out. It would make great TV ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I would give it to either of the girls on the list - both have done pretty well this year. Plus they are hot.

i think this year is actually really hard, no single person has become an instant idol like years before,

2008 - chris hoy, smashed it at the olympics and got people back on their bikes and riding around

2001 - david beckham - public image that was doing loads for the sport of football and charities,

2007 - joe kalzaghe - a guy that came from the dumps of wales to progress in the sport to #1 and maintain the position

Although i was happy for ryan giggs to win as he broke records last year and is someone who does alot for charity and is a sporting idol to many i think a life time achievment award would be more fitting the year he decides to retire

this year there are 3 i would like to see win

Lee westwood - World number one at his sport, puts alot of time back into grassroots golf and has had a very impresive year in competitions but i think he needs to win a major before hes a real #1

greame Macdowell - a real sports "personality", an irishman that everyone can attatch themselve to, someone who has won one of the biggest golf competitions in the world, finnished in the top 5 of the european tour Order of merit and someone who i think won us the Ryder Cup

Mark Cavendish - not everyone likes him and he certainly is a personality but what he has achieved on the bike is very comendable, to win the amount of stages he did is very respectable and to think that there were a few more that were reachable for him, i think his year will be next year when he wins 6 or 7 stages

unless greame swann does some amazing things down south i cant see him winning, david haye lost all his chances fighting fraudley harrison, and the rest are in sports that i think are not in the public eye enough

cav needs to win worlds next year. Not sure he can keep winning as many tour stages as he does, especially given the points reshuffle.

Nailed on if he wins worlds ...like the late great Tommy Simpson.

Agreed that Westwood would be good - still needs to win a major though.

Macdowell's had an amazing year though

I'll say this now, and will probably be proved wrong, but I doubt Cav will win the worlds: You rarely get an out and out sprinter winning these days. Cav doesn't, at the moment, have the stamina and all-round ability to win the worlds.

Mikey74 - next years worlds is tailor made for cav.

Also - he won Milan San Remo - one of the longest classics with a few 'lumps' near the end. If he targets the worlds (which he will) he clearly has the ability to win it. Only thing stopping him may be too small a GB team compared to French/Italians/Spain etc.

Not saying he will win next year but its his best chance as he wont be in the mix the follwing year in Italy.

If Freire,Hushovd,Boonen,Cipo can all win from sprints in the last 10 year then I'm sure he has a chance - would love him to do it.

To be fair I haven't seen next years course, but the Worlds courses usually have more than "a few lumps", the climbing has been quite brutal the last few years and has certainly put pay to the hopes of better riders than Cav.

I'd be very happy to be proved wrong

I haven't seen the list but I'd be surprised if A P McCoy [jump jockey] isn't on it. Popular sport, popular guy a bit of a character.

McCoy is on it, i dont think he comes from a big enough sport though to win, people who go racing dont vote in these things

A P certainly should be on the list, but like Peat or Atherton a minority sport is unlikely to win. He did eventually win the Grand National this year and deserves it for what he has done.

How many people watched Giro or TdF? Again, Cav an unlikely winner though another excellent year after a poor start by his high standards.

He could win the World Champs next year, it is Denmark iirc, and if he focuses on it he would certainly have a sprinters chance.

Eddie Izzard should get it this year. His marathon exploits were amazing. Regardless of whether or not he is a sports personality.
