After THIS THREAD yesterday, I think I'm going to be getting some 180mm Domains.
Now, I realise the Pitch is only rated for 160mm forks, but I can't see me breaking it, and I'll keep the Pikes for the UK, but whaddya reckon it'll be like in the Alps? Fun? Silly? Unrideable?
Go on, rip me to shreds! 8)
st off of here bought my 66 forks a couple of weeks ago so hopefully he'll be along in a moment to let you know how they feel on his Pitch.
Can you change the spring shaft assembly and step them down to 160? If you look in the spares catalogue this seems to be the only difference between the 160 and the 180. I could however be talking out of my *rse.
Or find some OEM 160 ones? Or U turns?
20mm difference in fork length - that's 13mm difference once sagged give or take. That's less than the difference in length between brands' forks so I'd be suprised if it was really a problem.
Or you could just restrict them to 160mm
PP, I have some 05/06 zochi 66's for sale. In excellent condition, 170mm travel. They are excellent forks, really plush, and really controlled. They have coil springs, with air preload, rebound and compression adjustment. These are often known as being the best 66's built ( i think). They havent been used except for for 10 days mincing in the alps, in the last 2 years...
Of any interest?
I've got 36 Vans on mine - they feel awesome. Think I saw some people on mtbr had put 180s on and not had any issues - voids your warranty though.
Lyons, they would need to be 06's to be any use- the 05 170mm 66's were pretty long (same length as the 200mm 888's from 06 IIRC!)
180mm domains on a Pitch? That sounds like a recipe for some lift-assisted Alpine fun.
*slight hijack*
Got some 120-160 U-Turn Domains for sale if interested
Fine as long as the only direction you're going in is down. I find the handling pretty unenjoyable at anything more than 140 unless i'm going down a hill fairly quickly. I'd be surprised if you broke it though.

In 2 weeks he will have had at least 3 other set of forks on the Pitch 😛
My Pitch feels great with 66s set at 150mm (a2c is the same as 36s @160) not tried it at 170 yet but I should think they might be fun. Going us is harder than it could be but it is still entirely possible and an inline post makes it easier. I would like to try some 180s but wouldn't want to live with it as the bike might be too slack.
Can you get an all travel spacer for them?
Yeah, to be honest i think mine are the 05's, they are really tall. Maybe too much for the pitch...
Lyons, Cakerider,
How much do you want for your forks please? Feel free to Email me (In profile) as I'm in the market with cash in my pocket! 🙂
Tomhughes,
Yes, I'd thought of banging a shorter spring in them as well. I'm just searching for technical diagrams to see if it's possible as a matter of fact!
I'm after 175.00, I just put a post up in the classifieds.
Peter
If you look at the spares catalogue it shows all the parts. I have some 160s, and the spring I believe is standard to it's just one bit you need to change?

I guess the worst that could happen is you ride it like a bike that was designed for a 180mm fork and the frame parts company with the headtube etc...? But you already knew that 😉
heres mine
those 36's are at 140mm, but it felt better with the pikes and air shock i think, i think 180's would easily ruin it. don't want your head angle changing that much through the stroke, the back won't be able to match them for plushness etc..i reckon unless you're a pinner that pikes would be fine for even the alps etc..amazing fork!
for 175 or so i'd just try it mate. whats the worst that can happen?
Ben, I did the Alps with the Pikes on last year and it wasn't too bad to be fair. But like most FSRs (it's not my first Spesh FSR) it's crying out for a longer fork. I wouldn't use the Domains in the UK, (and I'm keeping the Pikes before anyone asks!) and it looks as though I'll end up with a 160mm Domain of some description after a bit of jiggery-pokery, which will suit it down to the ground.... 🙂
EDIT
Or I'll see how it goes with the Domains, flog both them and the Pikes and get some coil Lyriks or Vanilla 36s.... Heheheheee 😈
Thanks for all the offers of forks guys, much appreciated, but you can stop now please (Pretty please!) my inbox is full! 😉
bit of a worrying sign if EVERYONE is trying to dog out their domains. why so keen to get rid?
I can't see me breaking it
I reckon, once you've ruled out this possibility then the "worst that can happen" is pretty mild, and shouldn't concern you. 🙂
Nicko - It's a cheap fork, that comes OEM on a lot of bikes, it's heavy. People just eother decide they don't need a fork like that or upgrade
BD - That's the spirit, yes!
To be fair, I reckon there'll be a new chapter in this thread in a few weeks' time.....If my little plan works out.... 😉

Cheap fork, came on new bike, upgraded because I already had a Totem waiting.
I don't think I've ever heard of one going wrong.
.i reckon unless you're a pinner that pikes would be fine for even the alps etc..amazing fork!
The Pikes were ok in the Alps on mine until the stanchions wore down. The 36s would have been MILES better though.
what terrain are you riding to warrant 180mm of travel? (bearing in mind full on downhill forks such as boxxers and fox 40s only have 20mm more)
end up like a chopper with a head angle like that, in my opinion
it'll be fine...
i been thinking about trying my totems on my five, just to see....
well jobs a goodun then. get it bought. lifes to short to query your decisions.
buy it. if they dont work for you, sell them on.
All in favour of Pete paying more in fuel costs to lug his 2 tonne hunk of overforked 'rig' to the Alps?
"I"
All in favour of Pete bringing 4 sets of forks, 3 extra wheels, and a 29er tyre to the alps?
"Not I"
All in favour of MrsPoddy rustling up some brill lamb shank ice lollies this year again?
"I"
It's sorted then. Thread closed.
DrP
Oh PP - I'm on a mission to lighten up the Meta this year, perhaps at the expense of health!!
I tell you what - you fit 200mm 'head tube ripping' forks to your Pitch, and I'll ride with carbon bars 😉 (on order from the US of A!)
DrP
PMSL!
I'm currently working out a 'Deal-or-no-Deal-Cash-in-the-Attic-Only-Fools-and-Horses" type deal that could see me end up with something rather special for t'Alps. Nudge-nudge-wink-wink, know-wot-I-mean-sonny.....
Watch this (Or any other) space.....
8)
Just buy that 1k Big Hit, you know you want too.
Keep the pitch as is.
🙂
Kirsty offered to do us a couple of dinners to take this year to be fair, but I said not to bother we'll eat that French muck instead. 😉
D'ya like bitter? I've got another 40 pints of home brew bubbling away right now......
Don't let me stop you, but I HATE beer!! There - I said it! I'll take some strongies and a few bottles of plonk!
Thinking of changing tyres too (not for any other exciting reason other than I'm sure they're wearing out!!!)
DrP

I do. You're right. But I've not ridden the Pitch for 4 months now, and MrsPP would go spare if I bought another bike and only used it once a year. I'm working on her letting me spend £320 on a lens for the camera soon, I reckon any more is pushing it. 🙂
I don't need a Pitch and a Big Hit. That's silly. Isn't it...?
DrP - You should get some of those things I borrowed last year. Never felt grip like it TBH, but thay added 2-2.5lb to the bike! 😕
Will we tow Petes big tool box behind on a bit of rope like last year?
Oh and the Pitch will deffo go inside this year as the bike rack is only rated to 40kgs
(hmmmm Mrs Poddys cooking hmmmm)
Oi!!!!!!!!!!!
It's only 32lb you gits!!!
Is that before you put the chopper forks and jumbo tyres back on?
I understand uppy downy seatposts are the rage this year?
I'm not using the Massey Ferguson rubber this year. I gave them back to their owner. Even if I end up with Domains on, it'll still be 1lb lighter than it was last year. Probably.
Awwwww no.
I forgot the pig-iron uppy-downy seatpost I just bought.
Forget my last post.
😳
Awww DOUBLE noooooo!
I was thinking of downhill innertubes too........ 🙁
How much climbing is there in the PPDS this year?
Can we have a 'Heaviest Bike' competition please? I think I might end up with the worlds first 35lb Pitch!
when you lot going and where, am in Morzine 23rd July myself.. 🙂
I just need to buy another whole bike before then... 😥
PDS Chatel 27th June
Pete
"Weigh in! weigh in!"
Chatel, 25-29th June, IIRC, camping somewhere.... 🙂
Andy, whilst I remember I've got a nice new Garmin sat-nav to get us there and back in lieu of Gary's this year. 🙂
32 pounds my ar$e Pete!!! I thought Gary's scale went round the dial once already... 😉
I'm wondering about high rollers, but the lighter version (LUST) seems to be pooly rated and thin? Hmm, will have a think about it!
Hopefully my carbon DH bars'll be here soon, I've taken the shifer windows off (it all counts!), and got some new Pro2 hubs (on same rims - I love 5.1s!) which should be lighter....
I have got a 10mm bolt through and a 12mm maxle kit to fit, which will add a few grammes.... oh - i fitted a better, lighter headset too.
Doubt i'll notice any of it!
DrP
I've got a euro TomTom we can use too.....
4 foot wide country lanes in favour of motorways anyone???
Farmer to us as we spin through muck on farmers yard in deepest darkest Wales:
"You got that TomTom then......"
DrP
Just noticed the tags; that "trans wales" joke is two years old now and still makes me giggle! 😆
DrP I think the quote was "TomTom? Third one through this week" 😆
Oh and my bike will be identical to last year; except a 20mm shorter stem and maybe new rims to replace those crappy Syncros things if they dont survive next week in Spain
32 pounds my ar$e Pete!!! I thought Gary's scale went round the dial once already...
LOL!!
The mickey taking has started waaaaaaaaaay too early for my liking. I think I shall lace your beers with Picolax..... 😈
Andy, I know a good wheelbuilder if you need one.
8)

That's quite something considering how much kit you seem to get through! 😉
I'd have thought you'd have money burning a hole in your pocket after selling those brakes to Anna that I had to fix on their first ride out. 😯
**Cough**shonky rubbish**cough**
😉
Biggest problem I've found with BIG forks on non DH bikes is not the head angle but the weight, makes the bike pretty nose heavy and that really threw out the handling off drops and jumps for me. Not a massive issues thought.

The one thing PP can handle is moving a lot of weight around. 😉
("Put me back on my bike [burp]")
Very true. I've had to shove you out of the way many times. 😛
I think everyone should read this thread and realise they really shouldn't be giving me any lip today. I'm on form with the retorts, and it shows. I win. So there.
Plus you are using words like "retort. It's all too much for me...... 🙂
