Always used both Specialized road and MTB shoes, last pair of mid-range Specialized shoes lasted me well over 25000 miles and were like wearing slippers, when the strap system finally broke i bought a pair of their Audax shoes, mistakenly believing they were designed to be a long distance shoe, but they were 9/10 stiff sole which was OK, but they were too tight at the toe. I have fairly widish feet and a friend tried them and said that he'd found the S-Works were the same fit and maybe it was their top-end shoes that were more fitted.

Therefore sold them on and brought a pair of mid-range Comp shoes, and again found them too tight, it seems that any Specialized road shoes made in last 2-3 years are slimmer than older models, has anyone else found this?

Any one recommend a good road shoe for distance riding, not racing for a gent with a wider plate of meat?

Certainly last years and possible the year before's were a lot tighter in the toe. This years are a little more generous by all accounts so may be worth looking at.

I’ve got a narrow heal but a reasonably wide front of my foot - I find Shimano are the best fit for me. Always feel snug with no tightness - both in road and xc mtb shows.

Having also tried both mtb and road shoes in Northwave I’m not a fan of that make - but they might be good for wider feet - I always find they’re just a bit too loose to be ideal - or going down half a size they are too short. Might be worth trying some of you have big / wise feet.

i didn't realise that, like the look of the new Torch 2.0 model, may have to bite the bullet and try a pair, trouble is no Specialized dealers near me to try before i buy.

@joebristol.  do you have regular or the wide-foot fit Shimano shoes?

I'd used S-Works shoes for years, had 4 different pairs and they'd all been fantastic, so when mine wore out I bought a new pair, slapped cleats on them and went for a ride without even trying them. And they crushed my toes.

I still wear them (and this was about 3 years ago), but they're nowhere near as comfortable as they used to be, I have to keep my toenails short or they put a lot of pressure on them. Won't be buying S-Works (or Spesh) next time, which saddens me, as I like the shoes.

@njee20

Glad it's not just me, i thought i'd been imagining it, or at 42 my feet had decided to start growing again.

Nope, they definitely changed the last. They used to have a very rounded toe box, and they went to a more 'typical' shape I'd say, with a longer taper. Not sure if that's the cause.

I went with Bontrager for my next MTB shoes, which seem good, but markedly 'clumpier' than the S-Works despite being their (at the time) top of the range shoes.

I had the same tight toes problem with my road s works  (went 1/2 size bugger for mtb) did the trimming toenails thing too😉 then realised the insole is quite thick under toes so shaved it a lot thinner with Stanley blade.. couple of mm transformed them....give it a go!

Funny this should come up - I have a pair of Specialized shoes and am beginning to realise they are too sloppy round the heel.
