[Closed] Spares pile/box, what do you have/not have ?

On another thread, the 'spares' thing came up and i was thinking about what i have.

Apart from obviously a 2nd bike, which covers it anyway, i have just about every spare possible, from pedals to seatposts, bars to bearings, mechs to chains. The only thing i can think of that i don't have is a rear shifter... Dunno why... Everything else though i think is covered, all brand new in boxes and ready if required.

Nothing new in boxes but I treat all of my bikes as rolling spares providers and I've a few bits and pieces lying around.

The last time I had a full bikes worth sat idle it caused an n+1 situation!

Mine aren’t so much spares, as bits I can’t bring myself to bin. Anything good tends to have a bike built around it...

Main bike, second main bike, third mainish bike, couple of spare bikes, 3 frames, bits to build up at least 2 of those frames. Lots of retro-ish bits, i.e Maguras, 90s chainsets, narrow bars, etc.
At least 5 sets of spare wheels (26, 27.5, and 29/700c).
Thousands of tyres.

I've got some of those curved bar ends that fit over the end of the bars. They weigh about the same as my hardtail.
A Sram trigger 8 speed rear shifter.
V brakes, cheapo cable disc brakes.

All kinds of 9/10 speed stuff which I've kept 'just in case', and some stems, bars and cranks which weigh the same as a small moon. Many, many wheels which will never get used.

We have spares for spares just in case. All boxed up, duplicated in the van so as to save leaving something in the garage thats needed at a race. I need to go through everything again to see what should be sold.

All boxed up

My spares are boxed up too. Well, they're chucked in a plastic storage box anyway 🙂

Very little. Had a purge a few years ago and either sold or donated anything that didn’t fit a bike I had.
If I do need anything on one of my “lower tier” bikes then the good bike gets an upgrade and the old part cascades down to the next level.

Oh, and luckily I kept my Fox 32 Vanillas from er, 2009(ish) (bought off classifieds) cos my Yeti's forks needed a service and were gone for over a month. Bunged the old Vanillas (with worn stanchions) on, QR adapter (another spare) in the hub, QR (another spare) holding the wheel on and DezbJr could still shred 🙂

I'm having a cull, so I've been putting some spares together.

Turns out I have more bikes than I thought I had... 🙂

Problem is Epicyclo is that you’re putting all you spare parts onto the spare frames you forgot you had.
All while not actually getting rid of anything 🙂

I've still got the cantilever brakes from my 1986 Rockhopper in the spares box. I think the original cranks may be in there as well. 30 years on and I still have the thought that they may come in useful.

I've spent many years now with my spares pile at the level where it's less a matter of what I don't have than what I can't find.

Though admittedly what I don't tend to have is anything relevant to most MTBs produced in the last decade or two 🙂

Way, way too much. I have several "spare" Chris King hubs, BB and Headsets. I also have enough Exposure lights that I don't need to swap them between bikes...it's a sickness.

I really, REALLY need "if you don't have an immediate use for it, ITS NOT A BARGAIN NO MATTER HOW CHEAP IT IS!" tattooed on the inside of my eyelids.

I’ve managed to amass a collection of knackered saddles, bars, grips and stems. Other than that I don’t have anything.

Nine speed 26" wheel survivalist here. Discontinued part paranoia keeps me awake at night. Gotta lotta chainrings/cassettes/chains. Could melt 'em down and probably build a tank instead.

Having just retired two bikes, pretty much everything (as long as it's single or 8 speed and 26"...).

Don't usually have much new/boxed/unused kicking around (other than some tyres, a BB or two and some brake pads) - internet and fast delivery means I generally take a 'just in time' approach to spares these days.

I’ve done away with 10 large boxes of parts at bike jumbles.

I’m taking apart 2-3 bikes I never ride and want to use the space for my new bike...

So that’s another 3 boxes of stuff someone will buy cheap and put to good use!

Don’t hoard! Use or sell.

Just decided to take the range-expanded 10 speed cassette off my Soul and fit a standard 10 speed while it's being a commuter, and found 2 9-speed XT cassetes, 1 10 speed XT, and 1 10 speed XTR. I'm a terrible person.

I'm in the process of building a DH bike and I think the only parts I had to buy was the frame and forks. Not that I don't have frames and forks spare, it's just they're not a dh bike

Loads of stuff from bikes I've taken apart but stand out is the 9 speed 11-34 XT cassettes brand new in box. I must have 5 of them. Only my rarely used road bike still uses 9 speed!

Has anybody else found that when you finally bite the bullet and get rid of something you’ve kept as spares for the last 20 years, you invariably have an urgent need for it the very next week!

I had boxes and boxes of "spare parts", bits and pieces of bikes all kept "just in case". I had a day at the bike jumble down at Bristol. It was a good day!

Silly amounts of stuff, mostly suspension service kits. For some reason I have a shed load of micro brain service kits, which are silly rare but I had bought loads :-/

Turns out Easter is a good time to speculatively bid on bnib relatively retro components. Think I'm going to need a bigger spares shelf.

I may need help.

Chris King hubs, headset(s), bottom bracket(s), Hope brakes, rotors, cassettes, chainrings, chains, pads, cable sets... stupid really. None of it goes wrong.

Basically everything apart from the specific item I actually need, because that's how the world works. If I throw something out or give it away, I'll inevitably find it's exactly teh spare I need a week later (as above).

Just searched the garage for a box to send away a set of 26in wheels I've just sold because I've got to many spare wheels hanging around, bingo, found a nice Hope Hoop box in the corner. Dig it out aaaaand there's a brand new hope pro 2 with old style stans ztr rim in it. I really am going to have a clear out.

This thread has spurred me on to dig through the mountain of crap that I've kept. For some reason I went through a phase of keeping old chains and cassettes and they're still laying about. I know I've even got a rotor bottom bracket that was meant to be a spare for something but apparently only fits rotor cranks, which I don't have. Fortunately it came with a bb spanner that also fits dub bbs, so that was nice.

Maybe a few tubes but otherwise almost nothing. All my bikes are current enough that I have no problems getting bits.

Pretty sure I only need some rims and a fork to build a fat/not fat bike,

I've started selling bits OFF my bike.

White industries eno cranks.

I'll take that 160quid on ebay and slap on some old LX cranks thanks.

Does anyone want a set of titec jones h bars?

I'm very guilty of this.

Mostly middle weight wheels when I've decided I need a nice light set, and then a nice tough set, and then I end up with a cheaper set that's in-between that's never used hung up with one of the new sets which rarely gets used. And a plethora of 26" wheels.

Many sets of 'not quite wide enough or flat enough' bars.

A complete xt 2x10 drivechain, cranks and cassette never even fited!

Although there are also shelves of shite that needs a clear out arround the good stuff. At some point I will strip the wheels down to parts and eBay what's not needed. The rest does occasionally end up on a bike when I swap between gears and singlespeed. Or decide it's time to finally wear out the pile of old stuff on a commuter or winter bike.

My small spares box got stolen 🙁 I worked out how much stuff was in it and it was at least £400. And now working on the bikes is like having a hole in the head.

OTOH, I did just build a whole bike out of "spares"- I bought it wheels, though I didn't have to, because they were super cheap

Lots and lots of 26 9sp,1+1/8 (but managed to sell 3 sets of forks so now down to 3 spares)rapid rise stuff which is sort of ok as we have 3 oldies which are our normal bikes, couple of old 7sp bits that is no longer needed but sadly now building up ebike stuff, I have a tendency to buy stuff that might be useful if it’s available at the right price which is sadly combined with a shocking inability to remember what I’ve already got - ho hum
