Superstar have deal on wheels with Spank rims with Switch hubs. I think the rims are about 570g and 2.4" wide. Is this excessively rugged for 5/6" travel bike used for trail riding e.g. XC, including some DH trails?

They are a wee bit wide and a wee bit heavy but not excessively so. They are fine as long as your not a weight weenie. Something like a DT 5.1 is 500 so your giving away 70g at the rim which is hardly the end of the world.
