Just spotted this video, which is ever so slightly mind blowing (to average me at least); it's on Facebook so I can't embed the video directly.

More here

https://cpofficial.com/watch-vittorio-brumotti-tackles-65-gradient-climb-road-bike/

So is it 65 degrees or 65%? (45 degrees is 100%)

Is the figure the overall gradient or the gradient at the steepest point (who knows but I expect the latter)

Did he climb the steeper bottom section? (it would appear not)

Could I do it? (highly unlikely)

Am I impressed? (not particularly but more so than the distorted lens perspective of some of the bullshit videos posted on social media)

Of course it's not 65 degrees. That's beyond extreme skiing steep

That’s near Moab I think. They drive 4x4s up it. The surface is extremely grippy, it is amazing what you can ride up/down/along at Moab.

Doesn't look as steep when showing him going back down.

"Of course it’s not 65 degrees. That’s beyond extreme skiing steep"

Of course its not (I had a protractor at school and everything) but it doesn't stop the caption in the video saying that. A quick scan on Google suggests it's a well-recycled 'fact'.

It’s apparently 65% at the steepest section, which is about 33 degrees.

We tried it when there on hols in 1992 - the lower bit only.

I think only 1 of us managed it (Kev Dangerous, of Escape Route). Proabbly on 24/28 bottom gear.

Video description on the FB reads 65 degree. Not 65%. 65 degree is 18.05%...

Cheers!

65 degrees would be more like 200%.

I'm sure its actually 65%

According to this converter  https://www.convertunits.com/from/degrees/to/percent

65 degree is 18.05%. 65% is 234 degree.

25% on The Strines in The Peaks is mighty tough uphil. 35% in Robin's Hood Bay looks insane...

Cheers!

234 degrees is easy - you're going downwards!  Although you are somewhat upside-down, so grip might be an issue 😉

Ivan, you're looking at pie charts, where 100% is 360 degrees.

% grade when measuring slope angle is proportion of a 1:1 slope, which is "100%" and 45 degrees.

That conversion page is bollocks, it's talking about the percentage of your way round a circle. 360 degrees = 100%. But that's not what percentage slope means.

Was it that climb? It was impossible. I can't imagine the lungs or legs you need to get all the way up

Just watching the descent has my bum twitching

Doesn't Rosedale Chimney Bank finish at 33%? It's nothing like as exposed though

I have the idea from somewhere that gradients on road signs are expressed as rise/distance along road (ie the sine not the tangent).  I can'f find any official document that is precise enough, the highway code just talks 20% as being "steep".  Obv at small gradients the difference is barely relevan.

We’re 19 replies in and I don’t know if anyone liked the video. I thought it was pretty cool - it looked very steep. In fact I’m not sure if even I could ride that.

Every day is learning day. Good to know. Video looks a bit meh.. but slope mighty, mighty steep...
