I own two,I thought it wasn't that popular but how wrong could I be ? As nice as it was to get out and ride by pitch for the first time this week I was shocked by the shear amount of people out on ugraded rides. It's got me thinking why do we do it. I did mine to better a brilliant frame but im also a bit of a bike tart so I threw a bit of bling on it. So go on show us yer custom builds and why you did them then, Here are mine

By custom do you mean custom build? Custom would suggest a custom made frame usually.

I think you'll find in one way or another, just about everyone's bike is 'custom'!!??

They're not really custom frames are they... very nice bikes, but they're 'customised' mass produced models, yes? You obviously like your white eh? 8)

All my bikes are customised, though none are custom built for me, yet... soon to be getting a custom road bike though, looking forward to that!

Yes maybe but im not just talking changing the grips im suggesting more upgrading forks, wheels etc rather than selling your bike and buying an upgrade

So a bike is only custom when the important bits are upgraded? Which bits classify as important bits though..

You buy bits that fit you better, replace stuff that wears out and as if by magic a 'custom' bike appears. I don't know anyone who rides a stock bike.

the last bike i bought complete was an ex8 3 years ago, i've had 3 frames since, so all three are custom using your philosophy, the ex8 lasted until i got home from the shop and changed the stem, tyres, saddle and wheels 🙂

Well that rests the case
Everyone does
I just didnt realise the amount of people who do, I rode my trek for a good year without any upgrades. Only now due to having a bit more money have I started to upgrade

Don't fret Rosss, 'tis all cool. Just bear in mind that you're mainly talking to 40 year old IT managers on here, chaps for whom custom means splurging £4k plus on a frame such as this:

BTW Ross, bloody nice bikes for a 16yr old... I was on a Kona Cindercone at your age; cost me AUD$1000 and took me a year to save up for!

Yep. I think I've owned one bike that was straight from the manufacturer built up, Specialized Langster. Everything else I put together myself.

I've had two complete bikes, both road - a Langster and an Allez. I also bought a Rockhopper complete but was 2nd hand and had some slightly upgraded bits I think.

My current mtb is a complete mess of different brands. I just upgrade parts as and when they break, with whatever's good and on sale at the time! I would like to start fresh with a new complete as it always feels like it's falling to bits.

I'd take "custom" to mean a custom built frame as well, but anyway...
One bike's more or less standard with a few upgrades, the other was bought as a frame only, so is inevitably custom.
I'm not sure where exactly you would draw the line between upgrades and custom build.
The standard bike is gradually getting bits replaced, so will soon be crossing the line.

I'm only a 36yr old IT manager and wouldn't spend 4k on a frame. Should I sod off to bikeradar or something? 😉

The only standard bike I've had was my first mtb, a 91 Marin Pine Mountain though that got 'customised' after a couple of months with barends and a suspension fork.

It's unlikely that i'd ever have a stock bike again, simply because now i have frames with sets of components on that i like, so it's always cheaper for me to buy second hand frames and move the bits across. And if i were to buy a whole bike there would always be something i didn't like, saddle, drive (only like sram) etc.

I would say 'full custom' would mean made to measure, 'custom build' could mean put together from a collection of parts, and 'upgraded/modified' could mean improving/changing a complete bought bike.

By this, i have 2 of the second sort.
