As round 3 of my battle to get my first set of tubeless wheels and tyres set up approaches, I've invested in a BETO tubeless inflator (rather than wrestle with a track pump alone or waste endless CO2 cylinders); hopefully it'll be a worthwhile long term investment.

Instructions are minimal but it's fairly obvious how it works; charge it with a track pump to the desired pressure (measured by the track pump gauge), attach the head, flip the lever and presto (or boom)!

It's a whooping great red cylinder (not unlike a small fire extinguisher) and clearly holds a significantly higher volume of air than the tyres.

Just put my mind at rest, when the pressure in the tyre equalises with the pressure in the cylinder the air flow stops - yes? Otherwise I might blow myself sky high!

Just make sure you remove the valve core first and it should pop on easy.

Yes.

But of course, the pressure you end up at will be a lot less than you started off with.

*Yes really.

Yes.

Thanks 🙂

No

Boom! 🙁

That's what I assumed, there's probably even a swizzy formula that would tell me what pressure to charge the cylinder to for a desired tyre pressure, based on the volume of the cylinder and tyre; I'll have a guess.

Make sure you put the sealant in before the first seating, that means that if it does go wrong you will have a fantastic photo opportunity of a sealant covered room.*

*Really don't do this...

^ Really don’t do that when your workshop is the spare bedroom. First time tubelessing I went sealant first, blew the tyre off the room and had sealant on all four walls, ceiling and carpet. Oh, and me. And it was very loud.

Best cordon off an exclusion zone and warn the neighbours first.

And make sure your fingers are away from the tyre, almost got mine nipped between tyre and rim when using work's compressor

Whilst I'd never really had any issues with tubeless, I purchased the BETO after a good months overtime and a fair portion of red wine. It's been just about the best thing I didn't need, I'm now even swapping tyres for conditions it makes it so easy. Plus, it's so sturdy I think I'll be handing it down the boatman generation's. I know nothing about about physics btw.
