Just riding along (really!) in my local woods recently - stopped for a breather, looked down and........... BAM - saw a crack in my Ti Truss fork. The Ti tubing had sheared about half way round the tubing, fairly close to the weld. Depression ensued and much also - I may even has uttered a few choice rude words.....

It's not a very good picture but you can just see the crack right next to where the lower truss tube meets the steerer tube. There is a small crack in the weld in the corresponding tube on the other side.

I called Jeff - explained what had happened - I use the bike up to 3 times a week in our local woods (Mud and roots no rocks), I don't jump it at all- and felt a little let down by the breakage. Jeff said it was certainly unusual for this to have happened, and it had only happened twice before - one was a big crash and the other where the bike had been thrashed over rocky terrain a lot. Jeff went on to say that as it was out of warranty - the best he could do was, a free weld up job, or $500 crash replacement - I said I'd think about it.

After thinking about our conversation - I felt a little let down by his response and emailed Jeff, saying I felt a little disappointed that this was the best he could do, considering the eye watering initial price tag, and I asked him to reconsider. I would feel unhappy with a welded up repair job - always wondering if those welds would hold, how long it would last etc. We agreed that I would send the fork to him for an examination and take it from there.

3 long weeks went by, before my fork had travelled from the UK to Oregon - and I got a call from Jeff. He revised his offer for a replacement to considerably lower than the initial $500, he has paid for shipping and threw in (without telling me) a lightweight steerer tube - which was a nice gesture !!

I'm really pleased that Jeff came through with a generous offer on the cost for a new fork, threw in some goodies and paid for the postage What a top man!

It's an old saying about every situation in life.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Jeff makes nice bikes. People make nice bikes for Jeff.

Thing is if you'd given up then it would have been the opposite story.

Just reminds me of the "Hope Phenomenon" - "my hub/brake fell to bits and I got a new one!"

I'm happy you're happy tho.

Great outcome, as you said it was out of warranty and he didn't have to humour you at all, if you took a motor back they would just try to sell you another or tell you tuff sh*t, offer of free repair or $500 tell me where else you would get this service?? maybe i'm wrong....

I'm not sure how many sides to this story there are? Bike broke, bike builder came through for me = result.

Things go wrong in life - it's how you deal with them that counts. I suppose if I wanted to be negative about it - I could - but hell, life's too short for that!

At least I won't have to ride my squashy bike for much longer ๐Ÿ˜€

He revised his offer for a replacement to considerably lower than the initial $500,

This sounds like he reduced his initial offer upon receiving your fork, typo ?

When my Giant broke, well out of warranty, I rang them and said it was broken. They sent me a brand new, upgraded frame, no questions asked, delivered the next day.

With a brand new, upgraded shock.

And a brand new headset.

Which was nice.

That is correct, Jeff revised his offer once he'd examined the fork. Apart from the cracks, the forks were pristine - no dents dings or any sign of crash damage - because there wasn't a crash.

Ah right, so his revised offer was for you having to pay less than the original crash replacement price ๐Ÿ™‚ I had it in my head that he had offered you $500 compo and then reduced it, doh!

So in summary, well done bearded man in shed ๐Ÿ˜‰

You'll have to ask Jeff.

Actually - I see this as positive for Jeff - potential customers will be reassured that they will be taken care of, even when his product is out of warranty -

No warranty if ridden over rocks then? Handy to know - if a bit limiting for a mountain bike.

Have to say, I wouldn't have a titanium bike now, Way way too many failures seen for the surely very limited number of them in use. Always next to the welds as well.

POSTED 8 HOURS AGO # REPORT-POST

No, he said that of the two that had broken, one had been constantly thrashed over rocks. Nothing at all about what happened about it, may well have been replaced, or out of warranty, we just don't know!

Jeff welded up the two broken forks, and said he hadn't heard back from either of them. So I assume they are still holding up.

Got my replacement fork today - YAY ๐Ÿ™‚ - fitted it and went for a shakedown spin - wow...... even with a Surly Nate 3.8 it really feels light and accelerates fast in comparison to my squishy 26er - this bike really is grin inducing. Night ride tonight. A real shame I missed the snow this year - the Nate would have been great for it.

Jones stuff seems a bargain as long as you don't want to ride on rocky terrain or have the peace of mind of a lifetime warranty...
