Just come to take the big ring off prior to fitting a bashguard, only to find it is held on by torx/star bolts. Anyone know what size they are before i head out to buy some please?

While we're on the subject of Shimano chainsets, are the SLX and XT chainrings all interchangeable?

Granny and middle yes. Outer will fit but the XT one is thicker where the bolts go as it is machined not stamped.

But they will fit, you just end up with a thickness mismatch between the spider and the ring. I run SLX on my XT chainset. Much cheaper and the granny is steel not aluminium.

Sorted, set of JCB-branded star keys for £6.98 🙂 Much easier with the right tools isn't it? I had all the kit laid out, the chainset on the bench etc, reached for the allen keys, grabbed the chainset and....Oh. 😳
Never even occured to me it wouldn't be a hex key, teach me to look first i suppose!
