After a seatpost mounted rack to do some bike-packing, to be used in conjunction with a rucksack. Needs to be as strong, reliable and light as pos. I'm currently looking at versions from Topeak and Blackburn. Anyone know anything about this sort of thing, or recommend me a particular model? Ta.

My feelings on them are that they put a lot of strain on the seat post and weigh quite a bit.

Perhaps better to get a large seat pack (like this) to put your stuff in under your saddle.

I asked the same question a year or so ago on this forum.......was told the seatpost mounted racks are a waste of time and that they move about quite a bit when weight on them so I opted for a rack instead for overnight adventures........it was good advice from the STW crowd.

I used to use a Blackburn one for the Polaris - which was sort of bike-packing really. It was rated to 10kg but I always thought that was pushing it a bit. I used to put my tent and kip mat on it, which would only be about 3kg all up. More weight than that and it had a tendency to slip round despite putting a piece of old inner tube between the clamp and the seat post to create a bit of friction. Having said that, mine had a quick release which I notice the current Blackburn ones don't. A bolt down clamp may be more secure.

I can't say I really noticed it when fitted. It obviously holds the weight a bit higher than a normal rack would and that's another reason for not over-burdening it.

So, for me it was a good, relatively cheep option for reducing some bulk and a little bit of weight in my rucksack.

I have used a Topeak one with quite a bit of sucess. No movement when loaded and didnt feel like it was putting too much load on the setpost especially if you can mount it low enough.

Here it is with my work clothes and lunch on it.

I saw a few people with them on this years WRT, they seemed to be waggling all over the place.

Go with a seatpack like the wildcat one or look at bikepack.eu stuff

Thanks for these. Wildcat Tiger looks nice, but it seems pretty expensive for what it is and possibly not that big. Might consider it though.

How do the seatpost ones 'waggle' about? From side to side is it?
