Bought an old Raleigh Pioneer Jaguar from the tip last year for £10, it had a stuck seatpost and it lived in the garden for a year until I finally got round to buying some Plusgas. Have spent the odd evening over the past two weeks applying Plusgas, and hammering/bashing the seatpost about until finally it started to twist, just done my hands and back in with a set of mole grips twisting it out a couple of mm at a time. As long as I haven't bent the frame whilst levering it about, the only damage is a dent in the top tube after I got a bit over enthusiastic trying to break the corrosion by hammering the post down a few mm!

Anyway, seatpost is 26mm and slides in fine for the first 10cm, then stops. The frame seems to be externally butted at this point, o/s diameter reduces from 29.5mm to 29mm. Assuming it reduces the same amount internally, it looks like I need a 25.4mm post. That seems to be a standard size looking on Google, but are there other sizes like 25.6mm that it could be?

Thanks 🙂

If you used a 25.4mm post then surely you'll never be able to clamp it? Just use a shorter 26mm post.

Don't know...I was assuming the clamp would be designed to take up the extra 0.5mm...can't see them designing a bike that you could only have 10cm of post in the frame? I'll have to buy a new one anyway as the old one has huge gouges out of it and the bonded in seatclamp broke off 🙂

Why on earth would you need more than 100mm of post in the frame?

100mm isn't exactly much? I'll cut down a post if required but surely it must have come with a 280mm post or so when it was new? I don't know about these things but just as its a roadie bike doesn't mean it was designed for a really short post does it?

Doesn't give much scope for adjustment if my girlfriend wants to ride it occasionally.

Old roadie posts were pretty short with not much sticking out above the frame.

Anyone else? Don't want to buy a 26mm post and chop it short if the bike will take a 25.4mm perfectly happily!
