The drivechain on my Vitus Vee-1 is getting quite tired, just wondering what combination of BB/Crank Arms/Chainring I can go for.
What's the difference between singlespeed and geared chainrings? Will I be ok with a 9sp compatible chainring on a singlespeed?
EDIT: 42t rings, so slightly different from the usual MTB sizes.
singlespeed chainrings often have longer teeth and not ramps or pins that are normally there to aid shifting.
Common option is to get a cheap set of cranks and replace the rings. But dedicated ones are available.
IF you want somewhere to start looking then try on-one, velo solo or charlie the bikemonger.
FWIW on my two singlespeed bikes both run a standard 104 bcd shimano crank. One has a standard 32t front ring (on-one) and the other a more manly 48t ring* (TA from sjs cycles).
16 at the back, used on the road for commuting.
I use a 9 speed TA ring on my saint cranks in the middle position with 1/8" chain on one of my SS and I have no issues. No guides or tensioners either and yes it has vertical dropouts. 34:16T on 26x2.3" tyres.
The other single speed uses an 8 speed middleburn chain ring with a 3/32" chain again no guide/tensioner nonsence, vertical dropouts and flawless perforance. Even older Shimano triple cranks on this one. 36:18T on 26x1.7" tyres this bike is meant for mudplugging.
If you are buying new rings you might as well buy SS rings though but if you are buying a second set of cranks that come with decent rings then use those if that works.
If you want the SS exclusive look then Middleburn gets my vote. I use RS7 cranks fitted with an uno 36T 3/32 chainring. The frame has vertical drop outs and an EBB so no need for a chain tensioner. The BB is iso and I did have a problem with wearing out standard bb bearings within a few months. Now use a SKF iso bb, which has been fitted for 2 years! This setup looks the dogs as the frame has no mech hanger or gear cable guides either. Rigid fork as well, obviously. I run a 18T cog for xc (2:1 ratio) and a 12T for commuting (3:1 ratio).
One is all you need!
