you'd need to run a 'proper' rear mech to cope with the chain growth I think.

Yes, any sprung tensioner should do the job. Is this for ssec10?

technically i think i'll be penalising myself by changing to a bouncy ss only a matter of weeks before ssec10 rather than a tried and trusted hardtail ss which i've had for years

It won't be bouncy though so long ss you ride it on zero sag
