I know people don't like Superstar, but these two products seem to fit the bill and they are cheap enough. Either might serve you well for years, or may just serve to give you a feel for 1x9/10 until you get a more permanent device.

I have the second. It stops my chain falling off whenever the bike's getting some serious hammer.

I've had both of those superstar ones also. The first has a really flimsy clamp. First one arrived broke, second one didn't last long. The bottom bracket one is good but can only be shimmed outwards with the supplied spacers. I had to shim mine inwards by putting a shim between the cage & bracket. Works perfectly though.

How come many chain devices look strangely like and front mech? Couldn't you just use a front mech?

I used an Superstar XCR with an x Brand chain tensioner, - both for sale ๐Ÿ˜€

As i've gone to the Superstar Plasma Chain Device.

I think there superb products, Never had an issue and i don't think there too flimsy.

Look good, Cheap and certainly do there job!

For 'XC', the Superstar BB mounted one for a tenner or whatever it was faultless. Ran one for a year before I went SS and it was quite frankly, superb. Light, easy to fit, choice of colours, cheap etc.

Run an MRP Mini-G2 on my 1x9'd full sus and whilst thats as perfect in use as the Superstar, its a load heavier (top and bottom guides and taco) and is a good place for muck/grime to build up. Actually been thinking about getting rid of it and running another Superstar device as in terms of keeping your chain one, I've found little to seperate the two.

+1 the Superstar BB mounted is fine

The seattube mounted version is flimsy though.

You'd want a bash of sorts with the dog fang, stop it dropping off the outside, but yes.

Couldn't you just use a front mech?

They're marginally heavier, but yep, nowt stopping you.

I use the Superstar one with a homemade seat tube mount, works well.
