[Closed] silly question about smart phones and bikes on planes.

I've got an old smart phone and had a thought that I could put it in with my bike when flying. This was, should my bike go in a different direction, I'd know where it was. Then had the thought that with the g-sensors in phones, could I record its activities to show excessive impact (dropped by baggage handlers) should any damage occur?

1. It's meant to be switched off in flight.
2. Why? If your bike's damaged, it's damaged. How would you record the data?

Makes no odds. GPS is a receiver not a transmitter.

BUT you are supposed to completely turn off ALL electronic devices during take off and landing, regardless what they are. (I assume pacemakers are exempt!)

I know the network is supposed to be off in flight but is GPS as well? How important is it really? They want tyres deflated as well but we know that's rubbish. Why? Well airlines go to great lengths to protect themselves from liability if stuff is damaged but if you could show negligence, when and where, you'd be in a much stronger position to claim.

GrahamS, you're the forum phone bod aren't you? Does such an ap exist or would it be difficult to write? To record and sudden shocks, when and where they happened?

Don't know about other phones but on an iPhone the gps is disabled when flight mode is selected.

But you can turn off the network and leave GPS running, like grahamS says, GPS doesn't transmit.

Am i? Oh dear. ๐Ÿ™

I have actually seen a few that record Gs + GPS etc - typically skiing / driving apps. Not seen one specifically for what you want but you might be able to make do.

However, not sure what kind of GPS signal you'd get inside the hold.
Security might not be too happy with live electronic devices in your bags - especially a phone.
And the airline would object to any electronic device being switched on during take off or landing.
(not sure of the reasoning: I've heard explanations that they worry about electronic interference and/or possible ignition of fuel vapours. Both sound fairly dubious to me)

Thanks. Wish there was some way to set it up with a timer. I'm not worried about the hold so much. If it suddenly experiences massive g or goes upside down in there, I've got bigger worries. It's more about it getting to and from the hold.

Yeah but timer would still require it to be "on".
Regard the hold, I was thinking when they pile a bunch of suitcases on top of it or when they throw it from one end of the hold to the other while unloading. ๐Ÿ˜€

Still I don't think there is much you can do without breaking airline rules.

If you do try it then be sure to wear clean underpants...

Those myth buster people couldn't make a phone affect a plane no matter how hard they tried.
However if it stops annoying ****s on their phones im all for it.
There was a story a few years ago of a Thai plane crash. They had to abort a landing just as they were coming in due to rain. The passengers were told they were diverting, so they all got on their phones to let their families know. Then crashed.
I can't get a signal in a supermarket, can you get one in a metal tube in the air?

Impact/Drop Sensor and GPS would need to be "polled" at regular intervals. The spike from a drop would probably be hidden between (say) the 1s gap between readings, and hence meaningless.

You can get stick-on 2 axis drop sensors that turn red if a limit has been exceeded. Be more useful, assuming you can spec the rating correctly for baggage handling. Of course the ones for the return journey would need to be in hand baggage ๐Ÿ˜‰

Of course an app would be cooler (in a geeky way) 8)

Maybe theres an app that allows you to set a schedual for the phone to turn on an switch off. Computers have this.

For the damage thing - see if you can get some of these: http://www.shockwatch.com/monitoring-devices/impact-sensor/impact-indicators/

If you pick up your bike and they've been set off you know there's been a drop. You'd need to work out what a sensible rating is though to avoid them being set off without impact.

I'm sure if you hunt around for an app you can find something to do it with a phone, apple have used similar stuff for years with laptops to detect drops and prepare for impact.

GPS on a phone shouldn't be a problem - i'm sure plenty of people get on planes and forget/don't bother to turn them off. Bit like the thing with using a phone at a petrol station. I suppose the biggest issue you would have would the phone staying on long enough whilst maintaining a connection so you can trace it 24 hours after you've stuck it in a hold and it's flown halfway across the world... also would need an active connection (i think) to report back a location which could be expensive if it roams and starts using data for a couple of days abroad!
