We'll be moving soon and I'd like some inspiration on how to set out a single garage as a really good bike store and workshop. Anyone got a really good one?

Used to have 🙁

Moved out, for my pwn place and it's much smaller. I miss my garage/workshop.

Please don't post pics of anything too nice or I'll get Garage Envy.

Weeksy i'd reccomend putting that socket set somewhere more secure.

Lost track of the times mine has dumped all the unsecured sockets on the floor after nudging it!

Back left hanging up 😉

I used to have a lovely single garage to myself with a work bench. Sorry- these are the only pics I have...

[IMG] [/IMG]

Recently moved and now down to a shed to hold everything (inc. garden stuff), so count yourself lucky! It's okay really. It's nice having everything close together. Maintenance is done outside.
Will post some pictures of that at some point..

It's evolved over a few years, but it's pretty sorted now.

I bought another tool chest which sits on the bench and clears up all the stuff that's on there in the photo. I must take another pic!

Thank you sir 🙂

If I started again, priorities would be

- some kind of tool wall to hold stuff you use most often
- a cabinet/tool chest for everything else
- A good long bench that's deep enough and at a good standing height with a vice
- Ways to store the bikes
- Compressor. Use this all the time for tyres but also for blowing stuff out/drying bikes after washing etc

Having all my MTB clothes in here as well is definitely good and I have a pretty good system for winter/night rides of making myself presentable before going back to the house. Would love to have water down to this outbuilding so I could put a shower in, but no easy way.

Sometimes I just go and have a potter even if nothing needs fixing (or beyond my ability to fix). Every man needs a shed!

Get yourself a large camping water container for water. Be efficient and you should be able to get a few showers from one.

I had a little Christmas project last year, after moving house and it being the dumping ground for a couple of months the garage got a make over whilst I was off work.

Before:

After:

It's progress a bit since then with tool racking and a maintenance stand, but can't find any pics.

I don't have any pictures of my garage, but I could easily fill a garage twice the footprint, it's all stacked on top of each other.

I have a motorbike in there with just about enough space to put it on an abbastand to work on it (but then you can't really get through the garage). Therefore also enough space to stick a bike on a stand and use the garage (arkose is currently on the stand)

One of the best parts of my garage is my facom tool cabinet. It's a proper red freestanding mechanics type job and it's filled with goodies (so is the wall and surrounding areas)

If I was to N-1 one of my bike I'd be able to get to my worktable properly which would really make life much better/easier, I'm still in two minds on that...

Bench grinder, pillar drill and vice on my worktable, all pretty useful

having just had my garage rebuilt, once the builder takes his shite out of it, i'm planning on:

-grey painting the floor

-standing height, bespoke made workbench at the rear (I'll make it) with a large enough area to actually work on, woodwork etc. I'll have a 'removable section' on it for cutting on, so as to not cut the table!. the bench will also be the 'garage' for my mower! I'll make a little ramp to roll it up on!

-decent shelving

-wall mounted 'stuff'

-LED lights.

I've several tool chests of varying sizes to go in too...

What's a good 'top of surface' height to aim for?

DrP

Deciding your kitchen worktop height. Kitchen base units are available starting from 870 mm (for shorter users) and up to 950-1000mm (for taller users). So you can decide which is best for you, and in accordance with what thickness of worktop you prefer. Worktops are usually 30mm or 40mm

A useful recommendation I found online when I was sorting out the garage was French Cleats. Basically you rip sections of timber lengthwise with a 45 degree cut, screw one strip to the wall and then cut the other strip into sections that you can use to create brackets or shelves for your stuff:

I did this with 18mm ply for the cleats on the walls of my garage (in some places I covered the wall with ply as a base, but in some places I just screwed the strips directly to the wall).

The advantage is that it is very easy to knock up custom brackets with odd bits of wood for all sorts of stuff, and it is easy to move things around afterwards, if you decide your layout is not right. I've got parts bins, tool hangers and even a fan and a monitor for the turbo trainer hanging off cleats.

The only tricky bit might be ripping the wood with the 45 degree cut if you don't have a suitable saw. I've got a cheapo Screwfix track saw which can be run at an angle, which made it easy.

I floored my garage with the high density foam interlocking tiles (Halfords do them pretty cheap) as a low effort alternative to preparing and painting the scabby concrete floor properly. They seem to wear pretty well, but leave some expansion room so they don't start to bow when it gets warmer!

Plus one on french cleats. My tool wall is 1500x2000mm and hanging on a single meter long french cleat.

Apart from leaving them leaning against the garage wall, has anyone got a clever solution for storing bike carriers when they're off the car?

If you hang it on the wall using the hooks it makes a handy bike holder

Mine hangs from the ceiling so I can still use the space underneath

Ours goes on the floor with two bikes on it. Rest are hung on the back wall.

Made a wall mounted stand which folds away utilising a tv wall bracket and a park tool stand

That's a great home made stand Tracey. I looked for one like that when I bought mine but couldn't find one.

firstly What have you got to put in it?

where are you going to store said items

what can you hang from ceiling walls Etc

what size is it?

difficult to give advice, I’m lucky enough to have a 600 sq ft garage now I live in the country but when I lived in the city my car didn’t even fit in the lock up

security? Alarm? CCTV? Ground anchors for locking bikes?

wifi?

tv?

i built workbench then put kitchen wall cabinets above

led lighting strips are great

air compressor with dual outlet, 1 at bench other going to extending reel at door so I can check cars

plenty of electrical sockets, easier put in at start, also extending reel

Mine is a total pit at the minute. Got a heap of gear to offload to a bike recycling charity and then need to tidy up sailing and kayaking kit so I can see the floor again.

I will take some of mine later, I have kitchen cabinets to the rear wall with a bench on top, the bench is supported by battens.

I have a roller cab which houses all of my tools, one drawer for sockets, one for screw drivers, one for spanners, the top section opens up and houses all of the task specific tools.

I also have a large Bisley tambour which houses all of my chemicals and power tools, I am going to replace the kitchen cabinets with two more tambours as they are so much easier to use without having to open the doors into work space. Very cheap second hand.

All of my bike bar two are on pedal wall mounts, it takes up the least space compared to hanging by wheels.

Be careful what you horde, you really don't need all those left hand 3 speed shifters....

Halfords Pro and industrial stuff is half price at the moment (and, in fact, most of the time!). I picked up a three-cabinet stack earlier in the year and I'm really happy with it - easily good enough for my needs and, at long last, I have some organisation to my tools!

Mine looks like a kitchen. Lots of worktop to lay tools out on. Handy sink, dishwasher for mucky parts. Cupboards stocked with food to get through long jobs. Ideal really.

No pics to hand. Just imagine a regular kitchen.

Dammit - one day I will have a workshop.... one day! Nice pics folks.

My garage/workshop is a mess at the moment.
Far too much unwanted crap in there - 2 internal fire doors, 2 single wardrobes (disassembled) and 'garden stuff'.
I do have kitchen cabinets for the walls - they're just not on the walls yet.....
And my work bench is covered in other assorted crap.....

I'm getting workshop envy looking at those nice tidy ones above.

I know what I'm doing Saturday afternoon now - tidying and getting some cabinets up!!

Well after seeing all the other workshops and feeling slightly ashamed of how much of a tip my garage was I decided to do something about it.

So took my tablet into the garage to watch the DH and tidy up while everyone else in England watched the football..

Managed to get a couple of cabinets up and some stuff put away.

I can now get to all the bikes, my tools, bench (kind of...) and now know where most of my spares are!

[img] [/img]

[img] [/img]

Couple more cabinets to put up and stuff to ditch but getting there.
