[Closed] Show me your Internal Gear'd MTBs

I love the clean-lines, maintenance-free aspect of SS (I put hundreds of kms on my fixed gear bike every week), and love the idea of Internal Gear'd Hubs.
I was thinking of putting an Alfine on an Inbred / Love/Hate.

I have an old Kona Fire Mountain, and I love the geometry for going downhill, but it's not the best climber (not at all a reflection on the rider 😛 ). And I'm thinking this could be an issue with both of these bikes - especially with the 3pounds or so of the Alfine on the rear.

Anyway, show me your IGH MTBs. I'd love to see some pics of Love/Hates or Inbreds, especially the short ones (put frame sizes plz) - I think even the small L/H will be slightly too big for me 😮

Here's mine...

I like it, though I'll be changing the front ring to a 36 beasty, find myself spinning out too often with the current 32 tooth option. Climbs very well and I don't really notice the weight of the Alfine on the back.

HA! Great pic.

I once did a job interview where I parked the bike inbetween two "no bikes" signs, and of course I stepped outside with the interviewers and they noticed my respect for authority!

Actually, that bike is quite like what I want to build! I love the silver rims too (I'm a sucker for the shineyness)

Is that the on-one carbon fork?

Here is my old one, its a 20" Cannondale 1FG i got off someone on here. Ace bike, but in the end i sold the Rohloff as i never really rode in conditions bad enough. Running it in SS mode is enough for my local stuff.

P1010019
P1010005
P1010012
P1010008

oh, and you could deffinatley feel the weight at the rear as the bike itself was very light. Not really a problem when riding it tho as it just felt like a slightly heavier normal bike.

Size medium (17.5") Alfine'd Love/Hate - although I've recently sold the frame and moved the hub onto a GF Rig 29er (no pics). I run a 32t chainring with a 23t cog on the rear, which is the biggest possible) and it's enough to get me up everything I could on a normal geared bike. Pedal out above 15mpg though.

This shows my homemade on-one-bone to engage with the torque arm using Brant's slotted drop out and IS caliper position without having to buy a monkeybone and a new Postmount caliper.

This bike has new fork and front wheel on it now, but is currently in it's SS incarnation. Rohloff going back on in a few weeks prior to a Pyrenees trip. SS build:
[img] [/img]

BTW: does anyone know how hubs like alfines or even 3 or 5 speed road gear hubs like Nexus or Sturmeys transfer torque to the frame with vertical dropouts?

thats what I thought. Just seems surprising that thats "all" it needs, when the rohloof uses torque plates, arms and bones.

There are some really nice bikes here, thanks guys!

That on one (ti?) is lovely, but totally out of my price range. I like the idea of being able to swap out the back wheel for a SS one.

I really like the love/hate, but feer it might be a little too big for teensy little me!

Nice shade of blue Swello

It's Cobalt Blue from the RAL chart (RAL 5013) - with Nicolai, you choose your RAL colour when you order - a bit of a bewildering choice! I chose that colour as it was quite understated - I leave the bike locked up all over the place and didn't want to draw attention to it with a mad colour 🙂

holyhutz - the same drop out design is on their 26" and 29" Scandal (Al) and inbred (steel) frames. Geometry differs a little, but not too much.

Scandal 26" & 29" slot = £275
Inbred 26" & 29" slot = £175

bargin IMO. Theyll build an alfine into it for £200 as well.

Yeah, On-One have crazy good prices...

I like red too, (and still think they should attribute that colour to mamadirt!)

Sweet baby Jesus, that Nicolai gives me a bad back just looking at it 😯

Is it as brutal/bombproof as it looks ?

Swello - any chance of a close up pic of the rohloff dropout arrangement?Cheers

Stoner - can't you use the rohloff torsion plate with the noggin on (like what would be used on a rohloff specific dropout) instead of a DIY speedbone? Just a query?

topganarider - the noggin is too far away from the axle centre to sit in the track end fully except for when the axle is all the way forward in the trackend. This prevents you from using the trackend for chain tensioning.

[img] [/img]

OEM dropouts have the noggin dropout vertically and do chain tensioning with an EBB or tensioner.

Trailmonkey - in a word - yes 🙂 There are obviously good points (efficiency, good feedback) and bad points (Feeling like you've been in a fight). I've got a Thudbuster for longer-days to negate the bad points 🙂

That's as good as I can do without leaving my desk 🙂 The triangular piece is a little custom Rack Mount that Nicolai did for me.

Its nice, but I meant with the Rohloff fitted! Doing one in a week or so and wanted to see levels of neatness obtainable.

Cheers

Cable is a little weird as I couldn't get the speedbone to go over the top of the calliper, but it works a treat.

thepodge - I've not missed my Heckler once since going back to steel HT. go on, do it!!!

ir_bandito...
got my self a 2008 Orange P7 and thrashed it round Afan for the day, I loved how quick it was both up and down but by Christ did I have a sore arse and knees by the end and 3 days after, I much prefer my slower and heavier 98 Marin rift zone. just its not too nice looking.

Do the internal gears have to be in the REAR hub?

Fozzie, whats with the spanner on the rear brake caliper, I'm guessing its a foot/heel brake?

Yes, ballsofcottonwool, it's a foot brake (8mm spanner and a Avid BB7).

this is my personal favourite, a Rohloff equiped titanium 29er version of an Eastern Woods Research frame. Not everyones cup off tea im sure. I am the lucky owner of a geared Thylacine Ti. In hindsight I wish that I also specified Rohloff dropouts. Its not the lightest, or cheapest internal hub (the Alfine is cheaper), but it really is bomb proof.
