I'm looking to build a decent, but cheap medium travel full suss bike for as little as possible. Looking along the lines of old orange 5, santa cruz hecklers, ideally single pivot. What have you built and what did it cost?

Only on stw is a Santa Cruz Heckler classed as a 'bargain basement shed bike' 😉

Well I did say older :-)I have most parts for a build, but I'm really looking for low maintainance too and those were the single pivots that came to mind. Part of me really fancies a circa 2003 Enduro, but too many bearings for me now and they ate lower shock bushes.

This cost me £500 to build but I had the brakes. It was the buisness & I should have kept it.

Get the Enduro. I've a 2004 and have put in one set of bearings despite owning it for six years, and the bushing is easy enough to replace too.

Edit: £650 complete in mid 2007.

My Heckler came to about £1000 with 2nd-hand frame and forks. Everything else was just a mish-mash of cheapish, new bits. It's not bargain-basement, but it's not a bad spec. for the price either.

(The original cost included a different fork which is now on another bike, so the configuration above was about £1200)

They both look fun! I will keep the enduro in mind then, I had one back in the day, but only kept it 5 months and probably gave it more stick than it was intended for. What year is the Heckler?

Is an '06, last of the non-swoopy ones I think. It came to me a couple of years ago.
