Please keep the pictures child friendly !!

My son's school is doing some bike training and I thought some photos to justify the wearing of helmets might go down well.

here is my contribution.

Broken nose and eye socket. Snot comes out of my eye when I blow my nose now. Dread to think what state I would have been in without my lid.

Yes, why not tell impressionable kids that a perfectly benign sporting activity is dangerous?

I can do you some road safety anecdotes if you want; the young man with his brain tissue and total blood volume leaking out of his ears after crashing without a seatbelt?

The young man with his scalp sliced off by the bonnet of his car?

The young man on a motorbike who hit a steel barrier at 30 mph, severing his spine?

I've got a couple of 'don't play with shotguns' ones too...

Sorry for the grump, but what you should be aiming at is that cycling is a worthwhile activity, with great health benefits, and a very small risk of injury....

I wonder if they do the same for the far more dangerous sport of rugby? ๐Ÿ™‚

Lighten up folks. Ignore the moral issues for one moment and just post your pics of the gore like the deluded Mad Bill asks or wind your winging necks in. Strewth. You're killing the "show us your" spirit.

the results of a high speed granite facial on Dartmoor would have been a whole lot worse without having my helmet on ๐Ÿ˜•

Times 3.

If you want to do something positive about helmets show them how adjust the straps on a helmet and do it up properly. Most cyclists even serious ones don't.

Crotchrocket: 2 rides old it was. A spanking new Arai. I was gutted.

Look on the bright side: I've bought four top of the range Arai lids and have used them on every ride but they've just made my head a bit heavy and have kept a bit of rain off. Yours did its job 2nd ride.

& the consultant looked at the inside of the lid & said "if it wasn't a very new lid, you'd be dead".

Get ride of that 5yr old slightly jaded & strangely too big lid, that fit when you bought it ๐Ÿ˜‰

I can tell you clink.

After lying totally still for about 5 seconds or so, you started flapping around like a fish.

After a while you stood up, but started to go straight back down again. We caught you and made you park your arse. You weren't really making any sense for a minute or so, and then you kept repeatedly saying the same things over and over again, like you couldn't remember what you had just said.

Had us worried for a little while.

Disappointingly little blood though.

ScienceOffice, crikey,

That was no face plant. All that blood was from a short but deep cut in my eyebrow. Very definitely the helmet saved me from a lot worse, as it has on a good few other occosions.

I would not describe biking as benign, and yes there are lots of other sports statistically more dangerous.

But kids should be encouraged to wear helmets, and correctly, & to think that wearing a helmet is cool, compared to a damaged face. Perhaps showing these pics is not the right way. Perhaps they should be shown to the parents instead.

Knocked out 2-3 mins, No memory of the crash, 30 mins before or 1 hour after!

I'd also include pics of pro riders with helmets on. That way the "you wear one cos your crap at riding" thing doesn't wash. Any DH rider looks like a power ranger, many DJ lads have lids on and most XC chaps have a typical vented sculpture on their noggins. Danny Mcaskill rocks the helm, Berrecloth, Athertons, Gracia etc.

No shit Sherlock...

I'm all for teaching kids about cycling, about the health benefits, about the environmental aspect, about the sporting side of it, about wearing the right kit.

This isn't really about that is it? This is showing gory pics which will emphasise the mistaken idea that cycling is inherently dangerous.

You wouldn't encourage walking by showing pics of a mountain rescue, or swimming by showing drowned folk would you?

It's a great opportunity to show kids that cycling is a positive thing in so many ways; don't spoil it.
