I want to start scoping out a new bike, but I wonder will investing more into a bike to keep for 5 years be better than a bike I keep for a year and then sell.
I've never been able to sell a bike ..I have given them to family members who would give them a good home and look after them ..
My last bike I kept for 10 years ( and then gave it to my son..who is getting as much pleasure from it as I did ) ..he will probably get my current bike too..
It might sound daft but there are just to many memories attached to them for me to get rid ..
For me, it's like houses. Spend as much as I can afford for something that I plan to look after and keep for as long as possible.
They're for my purpose, I don't consider resale. It's about satisfying my needs.
Bikes just aren’t a financial investment. I personally buy a bike I like and ride it until it’s shagged then spend abit fixing it and carry on. ThAt is until ooo shiny catches me off guard. Then the l bike gets kept in a shed as a spare or get leant to someone and eventually sold for peanuts.
Totally depends whether you're actually gonna keep it for five years.
I don't think I would, unless it were a roadie.
You don't invest in bikes you buy them. Buy what you can afford, ride it for as long as you like. Sell it and any money you get back is a bonus. Of the bikes I've sold most have gone for peanuts at about 5 years old. About a third never actually made it to resale because I broke them.
I once broke even at 12 months on an ebay vintage Raleigh. But it arrived filthy and needing a service which involved a strip down and rebuild.
I'll change up the numbers probably 3 years is max for me.
I change bikes when the need takes me or when finances dictate. Might keep one 5 years but might keep it 1. I tend to buy bikes that hold their value better than most and often when they are at sale prices so the sting isn’t too bad if I change quickly.
Saying that, i’m happy with my current modern bikes so they could hang around a while.
Buy a bike to ride it.
Unless you're buying a hand-made beauty. Then you'll polish/fret over it more than you ride it.
