I need to cut a carbon steerer.

I currently have a Park Tools SG 6 for steerer cutting duties:

But ... apparently the saw blade gap isn't wide enough for a carbon blade (which I need to still buy).

This is likely the only carbon fork I will be cutting so I was thinking I could add a couple of thin washers between the cutting plates to make the saw blade gap wide enough.

This should work, shouldn't it?

The Topeak saw guides look to achieve a similar outcome with two interchangeable plates (1mm and 2mm).

Do I need to be thinking about baby robins or will it all be just fine?

I don't see a problem with that.

Try not to inhale the dust.

Henry is prepped, ready and waiting.

It will work. But for a one off...

Justake the plate off and gut it against the face?

Or just wrap a bit of paper round and cut it free hand

Clearly you’ve not seen my previous freehand work 🤣

Just use a fresh normal blade. I've cut a few carbon steerers and never used a specific carbon cutting blade. Always worked fine.

Spacing works if you want to use an abrasive blade for carbon.

A 32tpi hacksaw black also works fine with moderate care. You can still snag and tear out fibres with the carbon specific blade if you are heavy handed.

I will put a tenner on you are trying to cut to fast. Slow cuts are fast cuts.

Ha, that's £10 to me ... I do all my free hand work slowly but blindfolded.

I use an old stem as a guide and whatever metal blade is still in my hacksaw.

Old stem as a guide. Nice 32tpi hacksaw blade. Go easy.

No need to over-complicate things.

No need to over-complicate things.

This is STW, in what world is not over complicating things an option?
