Shorter cranks, but...

Shorter cranks, but from where?

I've had one too many pedal strikes on my new bike so I'm thinking shorter cranks and smaller chainring, except I don't seem to be able to figure out what I need. It's a Hope BB with SRAM GX crankset but they're older than the DUB stuff that's now everywhere, so I'm assuming GXP and the only GXP stuff I can find is either road or eyewateringly expense XX gear.

Any ideas for suitable 160/165mm cranks? Or is it as simple as a BB adapter and going DUB?

The easiest option will be to remove the GXP adapters from your Hope BB making it a 24mm BB. Then for some Shimano 165mm cranks. Or Middleburn.

I have some BNIB Shimano SLX 165 cranks and a chainring if you are interested.

Shimano’s definitely a cheapish route if you can convert your BB. I didn’t find a cheaper way to go from 170mm to 165mm, but I was already running an XT chainset and BB. I found new arms for £95. I swapped over the 32T ring and like it.

Can you stretch to a Hope chainset? After putting 165mm Shimano cranks on my MTB  then 160mm Miranda cranks on my e-commuter-bike, and most definitely enjoying the change, I’ll probably stump up for 155mm Hopes on my next MTB build.

@breninbeener

Second dibs on those cranks please. I've been looking for some Shimano 165s for ages.

I have SLX 165mm cranks on all my MTBs, would recommend.

Chainring availability is somewhat limited in smaller sizes, but I still wouldn't change to another brand.

I need to do the same at some point - currently on 175mm XTRs which just **** off everything. Hopes or Middleburns are on my list.
