I've bought myself a set of xt M785 2x10 26/38 cranks that are going to replace the 3x10 M770 that are on at the moment but don't know whether I can use the current 3x10 front mech, shifter and chain or need a 2x10 specific new ones.
I can't find any XT 2x10 shifters anywhere online but I have a spare set of Sram X9/0 2x10 shifters and mechs, cassette and chain but it makes it a bigger job to replace everything as it has internal cabling.
So do I go X9 with more faffing about or stick with the XT setup and just sort out front mech?
I would fit the new crankset and keep the existing front mech.
You will need to raise it up the seat tube so it moves the chain onto the 38T.
I would use the granny and middle positions on the shifter and adjust the High and Low stops on the mech accordingly.

I already have those shifters, I notice it says suitable for 2x10 or 3x10 so I guess its just a matter of adjusting the mech like PaulD suggests.
I thought they might do a 2x10 specific shifter like SRAM do now they do the M785 crank.
The only reason I was looking to change to the X9 is that the XT seems hard work to shift even after being setup at LBS compared to my X9 3x9 on my old bike.

The LH shifter of an M780 should be convertible from 3 to 2 clicks.
Should be able to put the shifter in the middle (of 3) position and turn the screw on the underside from the 3x position to the 2x position.

Whats this!? ive just been running mine for years on a double with the front mech stops limiting the shifter to the granny and middle positions. Can you actually set the shift to only 2 clicks?!? More info in this please....
oops i retract that last message mine are M770s not 780s, still interesting though
Don't think any of the 10sd XT have this switch faciliy, but the XTR 980 does for sure. Its a switch button underneath the shifter from x3 to x2.
The LH M780 I have does
