Work this out.....

my faithful old xt 11 speed mech has been on 3 hardtails, all with a 50? tooth sunrace cassette, fine

I dug it out to build up the OH a Small Cortex out of bits i had (i succeeded except for hose and cable outer)

fitted it up, same chain i used when i took it off, B tension left a huge amount of gap to the smaller cogs, shifting was awful, biggest cog placed the mech horizontal, beyond its useful extension, reducing tension didn't give the clearance to get over the biggest cog

so i tried a new chain, longer out of the box,ย  still couldn't get it to work

Ordered a Deore m6100 mech instead

I can't fathom how it worked before, only differences is its a on a different frame, the small Sonder Cortex, last 2 bikes it was on were also Sonder hardtails also...

Different gear hanger geometry?

Different chainstay length?

What mert said.

My money is on the gear hanger being in a different rotational position.

You mightย  get it working with B screw adjustment or fitting a Goatlink.

From the thread title I thought mech hanger geometry. Of all the things that have been standardised in a bike, where the derailleur mount actually ends up, doesn't seem to be one of them.ย

This is the reading why I use 12 speed mechs on 11 speed 11-50 cassettes

yer i considered chain stay length, but figured a longer CS and therefore longer chain, would only benefit it..

And re mech mounting location.. that can be the only thing, but id have thought being on my 3rd Sonder, they'd use the same location...ย

But yes, Deore 12s mech in the post

LOL, there are differences between model years of the same frame. Hell, I've even seen different hangers used on different sizes of the same frame.

Just depends how the manufacture is contracted out.

Does it have the rotating tab on it which you have to make sure is placed over the stop on the drop out where the b tension screw fits? If you don't fit it properly you would get the symptoms that you describe

Shimano 11 speed mtb mech will do 46T. I've got it working with 48. 50T starts to get a bit fussy. However, Shimano 11 and 12 speed mtb have the same cable pull so the 12 speed mechs work on 11 speed cassettes and shifters but off more range. They do need a longer chain though.

Yer..the deore mech did the same thing 🤣

Putting one extra link in the chain was enough to make it all work..🤣 the 11 speed mech probably would have worked also ..

Doesn't want to drop one cog from 50 though...I blame the ai race cassette. Will see how it is in useย
