My son has a Hotrock 20 with a 6 speed twist grip. He is struggling to change the gears. What can I do to make it a bit easier for his skinny little arms?

Have you tried a new cable and outer?

We had a simular issue with our Hotrock - assuming yours is also new the shifter is very stiff for little ones when new, they loosen up after a while.

Shimano Revo Shift (I'm assuming this is what you have) has the lightest action of all the twist shifters. There's no breaking in period. If it's hard to change gear it's most likely it needs new cables, inners and outers.
There could be other reasons but it's impossible to diagnose on the internet

Thanks all, I`ll try the cable option. Its not new its 2nd hand and is about 2 years old but all in very good condition. He has been riding a CNOC 16 and this is a bit big for him, he is almost stopping each time he changes gear. Might get him in the gym to work on his upper body strengh.
