[Closed] Shimano MW91 shoes damaging themselves

I have  pr of Shimano MW91 winter boots. Ive had them around 3 yrs and only really worn them this year, for about 250 miles all on the road.

The top cuff is neoprene, and it provides a flexible warm water resistant collar at the top of the boot.

Immediately below this collar is a velcro strap for closing the boot. However when you bend your ankle as if moving your toes upwards, the hard abrasive edge of the velcro strap comes into contact with the soft neoprene. In 250 miles this has worn a hole in both neoprene cuffs at the front of the shoe.

I know they are out of warranty, but has anyone else had this problem?  Im properly fed up with it as i like the shoes and ive started to enjoy winter road biking rather than running, but a self eating pair of £140 shoes has spoilt it somewhat.

If you mean the MW81 I had exactly the same issue. Just put it down to poor design in the end.

Ended up getting them patcjed by a cobbler with some thin supple leather.

Sorry, yes they are MW 81. Its such a stupid design as the soft collor is continually fretting on the hard edge of the velcro strap. Annoying because the shoes are in mint condition and have hardly been used, and only on the road.

Can't say I've had that problem.

But would a lighter run along the edge of the velcro smooth it off?

Im guessing it would have helped initially. Not sure it will make too much difference now. Im cross with the crap design...argh

cant say i had this issue in many many years 5 years  3 strathpuffers and many thousands of winter miles commuting etc

infact what killed them was the inside face eventually wearing through rubbing against the crank over time.

replaced them with mt91s not looked back.

My non Shimano winter boots don't have a cuff, so all the water runs in.

The fix may save your Shimano boots...Sainsbury's heavy duty gloves Size medium for £2.50 :). Cut off the fingers leaving as much cuff as possible.

Put over ankles cut end first before putting shoes on.  Not had a dribble get in on the three rides since, and can now hose my legs and shoes down at the end of the ride 🙂

(Apologies for sideways pic, it's a trait of tinypic, can't fix it on mobile)
