So I got sucked into the marketing blurb and went for a Shimano XT 10 speed chain.
4 months (500km ish) of use and it's given up, Snapped it twice last week and now it looks like a toy snake! Yes it's been wet, yes it's done some time in the peaks and yes I'm running 1x10 with a chain device. Now either my legs are massively strong or shimano chains are made from cheese?
What alternative SRAM or KMC - don't mind spending money as long as it lasts - no I'm not buying a ti one!
Cheers Ben
Go back to 9 ๐
I changed over to Shimano after thinking the Sram ones didn't last. I use XTR and would expect to more than a 1000k on one.
Not what you want to hear but check your cassette for wear (or measure the chain) may have shagged both ๐
4 - 6 months is all you'll get out of them if you ride a fair bit apparently. Back to 9 speed if you don't like it, it's not just the shimano ones.
Did 3,500km on an XT 10-speed chain in all weather/conditions over 8 months and no complaints here. Changed the chain and cassette as a precaution for my WC2C but was life still in them. Honestly not found the wear to be bad at all, as good as 9 speed for sure.
Mines lasted around 18 months without failing but having given my drivetrain a good scrub over the weekend I've noticed its developed that loose "I'm probably going to snap soon" feel. Oddly the cassette and chainrings don't seem to have worn very much in comparison.
I might go for one of these to replace it: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=51844
Seems to have favourable reviews on CR and Evans sites....
KMC ten speed mate very good used on my CX and MTB ridden twice a week rain or shine cleaned....less so.... 8)

I don't find any difference, if anything 10 speed lasts better.
Fair enough. I was told this by a bike mechanic whom I hold in very high regard but if people are getting more wear then good!
Using time as an indication of wear is ridiculous. You need to go off distance.

How would he know what sort of use people were giving their bikes though, just because he works on them? ๐
Certainly having been using 10 speed for 3 years I've found it better, yet to break a chain, and I break quite a lot of chains.
i hope 10 spd doesn't last much less, they also cost twice as much. but they're thinner so common sense says they will indeed last less time (grammar is all wrong today, fewer, wear faster..?)

OK OK, vague I know but it was there.
Just changed mine at .75 wear after 650 miles so as to preserve the cassette and rings. New KMC has gone on.
I think it is all down to mileage, maintenance and conditions.
Strangely, and in fear of starting another riot, my 10 speed chain has lasted nearly a year or about 2600kms if my endo is right. I put this down to using a triple ring set up ๐
I was breaking about 3 9 speeds a winter but I think that was due to iced up cassettes and trying to power through deep snow regardless.
Well 4-6 months is all I'd expect to get out of any chain riding once a week! 500 miles at most I'd say.
