Considering a commuter bike but wondering how the Shimano ISG 3 - 3 speed system shapes up. Is it possible to pick up any real speed with this set up or is it more for just pootling along at a "relaxed" pace?

If you're going down the hub gear route, why not get more gears than a 3 speed? Shimano's Alfine with 8 gears gives a much broader spread of ratios, and it's not exactly expensive in the grand scheme of things.

The ISG3 is ace! I nearly bought a Specialized equipped with one the strength of it. And me Brompton's only got three gears and that baby FLIES.

Shimano's Alfine... it's not exactly expensive

Especially if you manage to find a dodgy second-hand one... ๐Ÿ˜‰

A Specialized is one I've been considering with this gearing...Also looked at a Giant with the 8 speed Alfine gears but the Giant seemed heavy in compsarison, and not sure if I'd need 8 speeds in a modest commute. Spesh is last years model but looks fine to me.

Get the real thing - a Sturmey-Archer 3 speed. Good for 10s of thousands of miles and bugger all friction. I think there's still a few records standing to them.

The "yoof" of today... Sometimes I question if you're all old before your time! A Brompton, I ask you... 3 Sturmey Archer powered speeds and you're all bleary eyed! No doubt the Alfine was too new fangled for you after all... ๐Ÿ˜‰
