Looking to get one for my Roadrat for over winter, what is the consensus on the thing, are they reliable?
8 speed BTW, if that makes any difference.
To buy one of these will be a fair bit more than my current 1 x 9 I have on at the moment and I was just wondering what the advantages are?

Yes they're reliable. Pros and cons have been covered, but for a low maintenance winter bike I say yes!
Mrs Finnegan's everyday bike has had an Alfine hub on it for (I think) three years now and it's given no trouble whatsoever, ridden all year round. I had it serviced by the LBS once, but when they'd opened it up they said it didn't need any attention. Charged peanuts to regrease and close it up again.
A few folk have had issues - and if you do get a failure it is very hard to repair other than putting a new gear cluster in.
However for most folk they are great - mine has run a year or two now with no issues at all.
so reliability high - but failures tend to be expensive to repair
Some good reading Here including some dead ones.
Had mine on a roadrat for over a year, its clunky and it does roll slowly and sometimes just feels wierdly rubbery, but no actual reliability issues. I degreased mine and filled it with ATF oil ,cant say I've noticed any difference. Gears sometimes slip when I least want them to (avoiding traffic on uphill bridges) but I think thats down to me usiggn a nexus shifter thats not as accurate as the Alfine shifter (but that was reverse rise so it sucked baws and I got rid.)
