so has anyone out there done this and did it work? I'm thinking deore levers and magura 4 pot calipers - because that's what I have. well, on two separate bikes.

anyway the other question was how much of a faff was it?

thanks O hive mind...

I have Magura MT8 levers and Zee calipers. Sorta works but not brilliantly. I've only got this set up as the MT8 caliper leaked on a road trip and the only option at the time was to Zee (post Covid supply chain issues).
I wouldn't chose to run such a set up but I'm too cheap to change it now...and Shimano pads are a lot cheaper and easier to get hold of than Magura.

anyway the other question was how much of a faff was it?

I got a bike shop to do it. They had to replace the hose and, IIRC, they used different barbs or olives but it was so long ago as I was just happy I had a working set of brakes...

I have XT levers with MT5 callipers on one bike. My absolute favourite brakes and once set up they have worked brilliantly and reliably. The initial fill/bleed though, that was a total pain in the arse to get all the air out of the levers. I like the feel of Shimano Servowave levers but I think there is a lot of room for improvement on the user friendliness of maintenance.

One caveat, if you are used to yanking on the anchors you will lock up everywhere and will hate them. Personally I love the instant retardation.

I used the Magura hose, Shimano olive and I think the Magura insert but not 100% on that last one. Do a search somewhere like MTBR and I’m sure you will find a ton of info.

Been running XTR M9000 (non servo-wave) levers and MT5 calipers for years. I really like them, lots of modulation and power. Fitting was as simple as popping Shimano barbs and olives into the Magura hoses, connecting up and bleeding. Bleeding is no more difficult than with either Shimano or Magura systems, I use Shimano fluid because my other bikes are Shimano and it's cheaper.

Got XT levers and MT5 calipers using putoline fork oil. I like the bite which suits my method of modulation. Had some problems with the magura hose at the magura - magura end, kept leaking at the banjo so switched to Shimano hoses.

Not sure it's worth it over standard Shimano as my deore m6100s on the hardtail have just as good lever feel, probably need to mess about with pad compounds.

That would be ridiculous having a Magura calliper bolted to your handlebars and a Shimano lever flopping around your axle...

I tried it, XT levers and MT5 calipers, but I could never really get it to work well. I think that this is most likely due to my incompetence when it came to bleeding them.  I've been able to stop several sets of brakes after without a problem, but this may possibly be in part due to the learning from the problems I had with shigura.

I have Saintgura. It’s good. No more powerful than the original MT5 setup, but the Saint levers feel nice and make me think of Roger Moore as I ride.

Was easy to set up… or at least not so difficult that I remember… unless it was so traumatic that I blocked the memory.

STX levers, MT5 clippers (and hoses, discs) better than the Saint on another bike, genuinely more powerful, consistent, and better at self adjusting. They are violently powerful. Mates who try it are always surprised at how good they are.

Zee levers with MT5 calipers. Was thinking about it anyway due to the two finger MT5 levers, but my hashing up of fitting one finger Magura blades forced the issue.

Best brakes I've tried. The great ergonomics of Shimano levers with actual reliable and powerful calipers.

Kept the Magura hoses and threw in Shimano barbs and olives. Took a couple of bleeds (no problem as the Magura bleed process is dead easy and a bubble bleed did the levers) to get rid of a slight sponginess but all good now. Using Royal Blood but only because I had some and it was already in the hoses - is it not basically the same as Shimano mineral oil with a different colour anyway?

TLDR. Go for it. Not really any faff at all depending on how good your bleeding is.
