But the more people feel comfortable and confident in themselves, the less likely they are to be exploited.

Exactly!!! I want to hug you! ๐Ÿ˜†

But it has to be 'personal' not because of some image or idea from a magazine. Not forced on you by someone else

It's not a positive world out there, equality is not 50/50 on boards or men and women getting there stuff out in public, it's respecting people for being people and judging everyone on talent and skills not tits and ass.

^^This.

That you chose your pictures to back up your point ?

WAs I attempting to make a point though? All I've done is post two comparable posed images of a boy and girl band, in order for others to evaluate them. What point, if any, would you think I was trying to make?

Both cover their music ability (or otherwise) with using sex/titillation to sell records?

Only one band appears to be doing so overtly. Why? Is it because they're 'empowered'? Or because they are following a pattern of behaviour which they are told will make them more successful/richer?

Another interesting thing, is that the woman in the video doesn't show her face at any point. If she'd so 'empowered' and confident etc, why not show her face?

BOBFOC?

not sure if its already been mentioned but has anyone commented on the Valhalla ski video in relation to the OP video? It contains a lot of nakedness so be aware its probably not safe for work, its loads of fun and but in no way offensive (in my view)

Great video - and with Patagonia, who would have thought it?

Theres a little bit (sorry) at 1:50 where I though the skier and the tree would be getting a little too close.

I bet everything was somewhat pert and the end of that filming!!

My wife moaned that there were not enough dicks in the vid above when she saw it. She should probably read this thread....

There are various comments about out-of-touch attitudes and how young women today think that a more sexualised culture is ok and normal. They might think it is "normal", but I disagree that they are mostly ok with it. From what I have heard, a lot of teenagers and young women are unhappy with it, and the pressure to look and behave in a certain way. The silly faceless boobs video might seem innocuous enough, but it's the thin end of the wedge.
I also disagree with the attitude that those of us who don't like the video have a problem with the human body, and are embarrassed by it. That is certainly not the case, and there is a world of difference between being comfortable with nudity and being concerned about the prevalence of sexualised imagery and potential effects on young people.

I'm not really into guessing games.

Can this be summed up by saying sex sells, men like looking at boobs (and some women like looking at todgers) and we as a society (almost globally) are probably a bit too liberal with it, but ultimately, that's a pretty harmless video with quite good riding it.

Well I read all the comments (sad, i know) BEFORE I watched the offending video.

I agree completely with the comments about the over-sexualization of society and the objectification of women. BUT, if I hadn't been told what to look for, I wouldn't really have noticed the young lady's cleavage at all. I was more interested in the trails she was riding and a bit annoyed because she kept locking up her rear wheel.

When I realised the film makers and their intended audience (presuably males) appear to be getting their rocks off over a bit of 18th century style cleavage I found it rather depressing. Its a bit like 12 year old boys s****ing over the word "period".

No. It can't.

Would you like to try again?

no, not really. I think what your saying is that no person shuld ever be looked at in any sexual way?
I hope you never look at a women (ever) and think, hmm, she's got nice legs/back/cleavage/smile/hair/bum* ever, otherwise you're just trolling

No, seriously Crikey, what is your point here? I'm actually interested. Have a young daughter growing up fast, and I'm wondering what I'm missing. I thought you were saying that it was wrong that men (people?) were objectifying in a sexual way. Is that right?

There's an 8 page thread for you to read, which encapsulates a number of views regarding the subject.

To recap; the kind of people who think that the original video is 'harmless', or 'a bit of fun', or simply 'sex sells', haven't sat down with a teenage daughter who gets asked if she wants a shag while she walks home from college.

It's up to you, you decide what kind of world you want to live in, and what kind of world you'd like your daughter to grow up in.

Go back and read the whole thread, see what people think, see what you'd like your daughter to think about your attitude.

Ah, you're struggling with the idea that I could look at women and appreciate them, yet not approve of a crass, outdated, exploitative way to sell T-shirts.

You've got a daughter, think about the way she would like you to think.

(...and you've gone back through 3 years of my posts? Wow.)

Your summing up was a fairly poor, if you take the time to read some of the points it's not an all or nothing argument.

Got it, so I can look at a women in the street and think 'phoar, look at the jugs on that!' and that's fine, but not if there's an advertising slogan on the cleavage?

Somehow doesn't seem right. I don't care what a model wants to use to sell stuff, but I'd much rather every bloke didn't think of my daughter that way in the street.

No, I can just smell hypocritical BS. I think that'll do for me, there's not going to be any sense in this.

Edit - 3 years of posts? Well, it took 4/5 clicks of the mouse to find a thread I remembered, but that'd be it. Literally 20 or 30 seconds work. I ought to join CID.

...which is exactly the point.

If we have a society where women are objectified, where they become 'tits on a bike' rather than a person who happens to be a woman riding a bike, the kind of thing my daughter and thousands of women everywhere get subjected to follows on.

It's ok to be attracted to women, it's ok to think that they are sexually attractive, it's not ok to use women's sexual attributes in a crass and juvenile way to sell stuff because it's insulting to women and insulting to men.

Right, I'm off. Been at work since 6:30 am.

I'm sure your daughter will grow up to feel valued for who she is rather than what she looks like. ๐Ÿ™‚

The day I wrote that I had to pay ยฃ60 or so; I'd been on a conference in London, came out and had a few pints, wandered about taking the sights... Then missed my paid for train home. Had to buy a ticket for the next train...

Video doesn't do it for me. Would like to see her in more conventional video with better music. Cleavage not required IMO. A lot of slagging for her riding style. Certainly better than mine, and better than most on here I suspect.
Not read everything, out of curiosity do we know who it is yet? I wondered if it was Anneke Beerten?

That "MTB" video is crap. The down-the-top aspect is really jarring and naff [and yes - the thin end of the wedge]. It's pathetic actually, really low of the t-shirt company - they should be ashamed.

The Skiiing one doesn't have any todgers of more than 3 pixels in shot [har har yes I bet it was cold] but it does feature a few shots of breasts, but I don't think it showed much in the way of man breasts...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against nakedness [done a bit of life-modelling, and there's a documentary in a museum somewhere featuring several minutes of me with no clothes on and an AMAZING tan], not am I against sexual nakedness or imagery - but the latter is far from easy to find that doesn't come from exploitation.

The figures for the number of women that have been harassed on the street are shocking:

"Catcalls, sexually explicit comments, sexist remarks, groping, leering, stalking, public masturbation, and assault. Most women (more than 80% worldwide) and LGBQT folks will face gender-based street harassment at some point in their life. Street harassment limits people's mobility and access to public spaces. It is a form of gender violence and it's a human rights violation. It needs to stop." http://www.stopstreetharassment.org/

This is NOT unconnected to the objectification of women we see every day in pop cultures.

Then there's the sex workers and the trafficking of women [and men] for sex - this stuff is all connected. Objectification, gratification without emotional involvement, all connected. Yes they have root in human desires, but so does murder and that's not accepted.

Sometimes things just have to change.

Oh and for the record CountZero - taking and publishing that photo was out of line. Or did you ask the women if you could take it?

So Newsnight just starting with Emily dressed like a nun as normal??? A section on how feminism stands on the modern sexualisation of women. Probably phrased that badly but this is just a PSA.

Is it not? Because it's been going on forever, certainly predates permissive/exploitative modern media. And it happens in countries where this objectification of women isn't present in the same way.

Yo, I said pop culture dude - not modern culture ๐Ÿ™‚

It's connected alright - maybe not exclusively so but...

Interesting point though, I wonder what the trend for this is over the last few years?

Sexualising young women isn't new, in many cultures girls would be married at 12 or 14 and often "promised" younger than that. In many respects it made sense as life expectancy was mid 30's.

But in the age of instagram/facebook/Twitter/selfies is there any changing it now its so prevalent?

Coupled with getting rid of our angst and embarrassment at the human body. It's really rather pathetic (in the true sense of the word) that we are so hung up about and/or get excited by basic human parts.

Just let them hang out and be done with it - on both sides! The novelty would soon wear off!!

What this guy said, everything else is just left overs of Christian puritanism. The more you try to repent, the more you secretly want it - thus cognitive dissonance set's in and festers slowly rotting the fabric of your being away.
