Ok, I have the tool but cannot get the thing to shift. (this tool http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/park-tool-bottom-bracket-tool-bbt22/rp-prod17704?gs=1&utm_source=google&utm_term=&utm_campaign=Chain+Reaction-UK-PLA-PLA-All-DT-SE-Shopping+QLB+Generic+Desktop&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mkwid|sOWs0gz59_dc|pcrid|161850070953|pkw||pmt||prd|54958UK)

Part of the problem is trying to get the tool to stay in place when I turn it.

I have tried fitting a socket but not enough leverage to move anything.

I have clamped the tool onto a workbench, lowered the bike on to that and tried to turn the bike. Nothing budges but the bike keeps lifting off the tool before I can really force it.

I have played a blow torch over the frame and then lowered the bike but nothing budges.

Any bright ideas?

An impact wrench of the air or electric variety. Not as brutal as you may imagine and will probably have it out quickly without causing any damage. My LBS has an electric impact gun for exactly this. Where are you? I've got a selection of air driven ones.

Just to confirm, you are turning in the correct direction right?

BB cups are L/R hand threaded...

Is it square taper? If so I may be able to assist: I have a VAR tool like this, and the spring holds the tool in place:

If it's Octalink or ISIS, I think the latest version will fit:

Bolting the tool to the bottom bracket - much like shown above - as recommended by Paul Davies kept it in place well enough for me to clamp it and use the frame for leverage.

I now have a new smooth BB in place.

Thanks All

For the record, I struggled to get a shimano BB out, even snapped a big Allen key in the process.
What seemed to work was plusgas around the interface, but also knocking out the bearing first.
This gave the softer alloy shell a bit of room to move I think.

Lots of Copperslip applied and the first ride confirmed everything is silent once more
