what do you use to secure your bikes?
There have been a spate of burglaries in our area and it's got me thinking that it's about time i do something about locking my bikes down. I currently have 4 bikes (2 of any value, 2 cheap ones that would only be annoying if nicked) hanging on the wall of a locked garage and i'm thinking of securing the 2 valuable ones. (i'm partly hoping that the other 2 will attract the thiefs and they wont bother with the valuable locked ones).
I'm thinking long motorcycle lock round the frames and wheels and a ground anchor fixed into the masonry wall.
What do you guys use?
first rule of home bike security is not to put your security details up on the interweb on an open forum ....
You cannot stop them, just slow them down. Despite ripping off a steel re-inforced, 4-hinged, multi-point locking garage door, my ground anchor and chain were too strong for the individuals who nicked my bike. They just sawed through the frame.
If someone comes tooled up ad targetting you they are going to get your bikes. Lock will just slow them down a bit.
A good alarm might deter them long enough. Otherwise good insurance.
don't advertise your bikes to people, be descrete and keep them hidden from view.

Although I will say multi layered security seems to help. Make the garden difficult to get into, make the shed/garage difficult to get into, once in there make the bikes difficult to get at and once they're at the bikes make them difficult to remove.
If you're going to get a motorcycle chain and lock make it a bloody big one, it seems massively expensive initially but it's not something that is going to wear out so you've most likely got it for life.
They just sawed through the frame.
That feels even more gutting than stealing the thing.
As above, if they want your bikes they will get them, regardless of whether you spend £200 on a ground anchor and expensive lock.
I just have a high piched alarm on the shed door and a D lock cemented in to the shed floor, through which I have 2 cable lock things that I can run through the bikes/lawn mower etc. Ok they can cut the cable, but as above they will cut the bike if they cant get the lock anyhow.
I'm from the school of thought of make it look as inconspicuous as possible, so no big padlocks on the shed door, CCTV cameras etc etc that just shows you have some thing expensive.
Never wash your bike in public view, or leave the bike on the car outside the house etc. Also make sure you arnt being watched when you come home from a ride.
Also and a good point that I didnt do at first, if you use some thing like Endomondo and ride from home, either make the routes private, or only start tracking when a bit away from home.
What FunkyDunc said.
Also it might be worth considering what else you have in the locality of your bike, if you own an angle grinder/hacksaw/crowbar etc are they available to a thief to use on your security devices?
This sums it up perfectly;

The main point being don't let people know you've got expensive bikes in there in the first place. Eg. don't wash the bike out on the front, don't work in the garage with the door open etc etc.

I try to be very careful about how wide i open the garage door. Even when I'm doing gardening and i'm always in an out of the garage I keep it half down so the bikes are not in plain view. The bikes are washed and maintained out the back.
There is a guy on the next street from me who has an Emsworth Epiphany and fairly often when I walk past on a Saturday night the bike is on the roof on full show. I don't know if he still has it but it's not been up there for a while.
Some old blankets covering what is in the garage may be an idea. That way when you do open up not everything is on show.
