Help, no matter how hard I try, or mess about attempting to get the tyre sat correctly on the rim the bead will just not seat.
What am I doing wrong - its driving me mad

Are you using lots of soapy water? That and a good track pump seemed to work for me - although they were still a bug*er to get on the rim in the first place.

Tried to seat a Hans Dampf today...gave up after two hours. Fingers feel like they're about to fall off.

Soapy water, liquid latex, sore fingers and thumbs and a good track pump. Its been two evenings of fighting the bugger.
I might have to go back to slipping and sliding on the old High Roller
